Margan Top Kashmir is not a place most first-time visitors have heard of, and that is the point. Also called Margan Pass, it is a high mountain crossing in South Kashmir that links the main Valley, via Kokernag, to the remote Warwan Valley in Kishtwar. There is no town, no market and nothing built for tourists. There is only a road that climbs through pine forest into alpine meadow and then onto a bare, windy ridge. This guide covers how far the pass is from Srinagar and Anantnag, what the road is like, when it is open and what a day there really looks like.
Margan Top Kashmir Quick Facts: Distance, Height and Road Status
The short answer: Margan Top Kashmir is roughly 115 to 125 km and 3.5 to 4 hours from Srinagar, about 70 km from Anantnag town, and about 3,550 to 3,700 m high. The road is usually open from May to early November and usually closed by snow from late November to March.

| Distance from Anantnag town | Roughly 70 km, about 2.5 to 3 hours |
| Distance from Kokernag | Roughly 35 to 45 km, about 1.5 to 2 hours |
| Best months | July to September |
| Usually closed | Late November to March (snow decides the dates) |
| Best vehicle | A sturdy SUV, or a 4×4 if the road is rough |
| Facilities at the top | None: no shops, no fuel, no reliable mobile signal |
| ID | Carry photo ID. Foreign visitors should carry the original passport |
| Nearby | Sinthan Top, on the neighbouring NH 244 road towards Kishtwar |
Status update: On January 2, 2026, the SDM Kokernag ordered a ban on trekking, camping, hiking and similar outdoor activities at Margan Top, Chauhar Nag and Sinthan Top, citing security concerns. That order has since been lifted. Rules at the pass can still change at short notice, so confirm the current position with J&K Tourism or a local operator before you plan a trek or a camp.
Where Is Margan Top Kashmir and How High Is It?
Margan Top Kashmir sits on the Anantnag (Kashmir) and Kishtwar (Jammu division) side of the Pir Panjal, roughly 35 to 45 km from Kokernag. It is around 3,700 m (about 12,100 ft) high, though some sources give slightly lower figures. At that height the weather changes fast and the air feels thin if you are not used to it.
If you are new to this part of the Valley, the Ultimate Kashmir Travel Guide 2026 shows where the Kokernag corridor sits against Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg.
Is Margan Top Kashmir Open? Best Time to Visit
The road is seasonal. It is the only road link for the Warwan and Marwah valleys, so the administration clears it as early as it can, but snow decides the dates.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Late November to March | Snow usually closes the road. In a low-snow December in 2024, the road stayed open but frozen and dangerous, and officials issued a warning after a truck accident. |
| April | Snow clearing begins. In one record year it was cleared as early as March 14, but the road is usually opened in May. Do not plan around it. |
| May to June | The road reopens in stages. Expect patches of snow, mud and fast-changing weather. |
| July to September | The best window. The road is most reliable and the meadows are at their fullest. By September the light is sharper for photos and the road can already be rougher. |
| October to November | Cold, short days and early snow are possible. Check the road before you leave. |
This table is based on local reports and our own routes. Conditions change from year to year, so ask your driver or us about the current state of the road. A clear morning at the bottom does not guarantee a clear afternoon at the top.
How to Reach Margan Top Kashmir
The motor road to Margan Top Kashmir starts near Kokernag and climbs towards Warwan. District notices call it the Kokernag to Margan road. Many guides route the trip via Daksum, which sits on the neighbouring NH 244 road to Sinthan Top. Ask your driver which approach is open on the day you go.
From Srinagar: Srinagar to Anantnag to Kokernag, then the Margan road. It is roughly 115 to 125 km and about 3.5 to 4 hours one way, depending on stops and the road.
From Pahalgam: If you are based in Pahalgam, you can reach Anantnag and Kokernag and join the same road. It is a realistic day trip without going back to Srinagar first. Our Pahalgam travel guide covers what else to plan around it.
By taxi or private car: There is no regular public transport to the top. A hired car with a local driver is the normal way to go, and it is the safest choice for first-time visitors.

|---|---|---|
| Srinagar to the pass | 115 to 125 km | 3.5 to 4 hours |

These are planning figures from operators, not official measurements. Add time for photo stops, a slow truck on a single lane and any road work.
Road Condition and Which Vehicle to Take
The road to Margan Top Kashmir is part of the experience, but not one to take casually. It is simple until Kokernag, and then it narrows, with switchbacks, loose gravel and rough patches near the top. Recent rain, snowmelt and landslides can change it quickly.
Because this is a working road for Warwan and Marwah, you will share it with local trucks and taxis. Give them room and do not drive it after dark.
- Best choice: a sturdy SUV, or a 4×4 if the road is in poor shape.
- Sedans: they can sometimes manage in good weather, but they are not ideal.
- Driver: if you do not know mountain roads, go with a local driver who knows the current condition of the road.
Things to Do at Margan Top Kashmir
There is no checklist of sights here the way Pahalgam or Gulmarg have one. What fills the time is simpler.
- Photography. Snow patches against green meadow, the Warwan-side ranges and wildflowers through July. The light up here is different from the rest of the Valley.
- Trekking access. Under normal circumstances, Margan Top Kashmir is a real trailhead. One route goes towards Sinthan Top past the high lakes known locally as Chauhar Nag, over 3 to 4 days. A longer one goes towards Botakote near Pahalgam through Langnai Valley, over 4 to 5 days. Our guide to unexplored alpine lake trekking routes in Kashmir covers the planning side. Check the trek rules before you go, as the status update above explains.
- Stargazing. With no settlement and almost no light pollution, clear nights at Margan Top Kashmir are very dark. This works best on a camping trip in the open season.
- A day drive. Plenty of visitors simply drive up, spend an hour or two at the top and head back down. It needs no gear beyond warm clothes and water.
- A picnic stop. Carry your own food and tea in a flask. Nothing is sold on the way up to Margan Top Kashmir past Kokernag.
- Meadow walks. Short walks near the road are fine in July and August. Stay close to your vehicle and do not walk off alone.
- A Kokernag side trip. Pair Margan Top Kashmir with a stop in Kokernag on the way back, where the stay options and food are easier.
A Realistic Day Trip to Margan Top Kashmir
- Leave Srinagar by about 6 AM so you are on the upper road in the morning.
- Stop briefly around Kokernag for water and food, because there is nothing higher up.
- Reach the top mid-morning and spend one to two hours on views and photos.
- Start down by about 1 PM, before the afternoon weather shifts and well before dark.
If that sounds like too much in one day, base yourself in Kokernag or Daksum instead.

What to Expect: No Facilities
There is nothing at Margan Top Kashmir itself. No shops, no dhabas, no fuel and no mobile signal you can rely on. Carry all the food, water and warm layers you need before you leave Kokernag, and do not count on connectivity to call ahead or check the weather. Temperatures drop fast even in July.
The nearest stays are in Kokernag, with government tourist bungalows and private guesthouses, and in Daksum, with more basic forest huts and homestays. Either is a sensible base if you would rather not do the climb and a long drive back in one day.
What to Carry
- Drinking water and packed food
- A warm jacket, even in summer
- Power bank and offline maps (download them before you climb)
- Basic medicines, including anything for altitude or motion sickness
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Comfortable shoes for uneven ground
- Photo ID (original passport for foreign visitors)
If you are going late in the season, our Kashmir winter packing guide is a good checklist for the colder layers.
Margan Top Kashmir in Winter: What Foreign Visitors Should Know
Visitors from the UK, the US, Australia, the Gulf and Southeast Asia often ask whether they can see Margan Top Kashmir under snow. In most winters the answer is no. The road usually closes from late November to March, and even when it stays open it can be frozen and unsafe, as the December 2024 warning showed. We do not sell winter trips to the pass.
If you land in the cold months, the better choices are places with cleared roads and proper facilities. Gulmarg is the main snow stop, and our guide to planning a winter ski trip to Gulmarg explains how. Pahalgam in winter is quieter and easier to reach. Chillai Kalan, the coldest stretch, runs from 21 December to about 30 January, and our Chillai Kalan guide shows what to expect. For safety questions, read is Kashmir safe in winter before you book.
Passport and visa points. Foreign visitors should carry the original passport and a copy of the Indian visa or e-visa (apply on the official Indian e-Visa portal). Checkpoints on this road can ask for ID, so keep both within reach, not in the luggage boot. We know of no separate permit for a day drive to the pass from the Kokernag side, but rules for the Kishtwar side are a different matter, so ask us before you plan to cross over to Warwan. Our page for foreign tourists in Kashmir lists the other things overseas guests should sort out before arrival.
Margan Top Kashmir or Sinthan Top?
The two are close enough that people ask which to prioritise. Sinthan Top is better known and easier to reach, on the main NH 244 road towards Kishtwar. Margan Top Kashmir is quieter and less visited. Our Sinthan Top guide covers the other side of the comparison.
| Feature | Margan Top Kashmir | Sinthan Top |
|---|---|---|
| Crowd | Quiet and offbeat | Somewhat more visited |
| Facilities | None, no reliable mobile signal | Minimal, some roadside tea stalls |
| Best for | Wild views, Warwan link, stargazing | Wide panoramic views from the highway |
| Road | Narrower, rougher, 4×4 or SUV ideal | Main highway road, easier |
If you have the time, you can combine both in one long day.
Is This Trip Right for You?
A trip to Margan Top Kashmir suits you if you like quiet mountain roads, are fine with no facilities, and are happy to turn back if the weather changes. It is not a good fit if you get car sick on switchbacks, have trouble at altitude, are travelling with very young children or elderly parents, or need to be sure of food and a toilet stop on the way. Gulmarg or Pahalgam are easier days for them.
Margan Top Kashmir Weather and Altitude: What to Prepare For
At close to 3,700 m, Margan Top Kashmir sits well above the height where most visitors from the plains feel fully comfortable. Weather here changes within an hour. A sunny start can turn into cloud, cold wind or a short rain shower by noon, and the top is always much colder than Kokernag or Anantnag. Dress in layers, keep a windproof jacket in the car and carry gloves even in July.
Altitude can bring a headache, light nausea or tiredness. Margan Top Kashmir is a drive-up pass, so the climb is gradual, but it still helps to follow a few simple habits:
- Drink water through the day and avoid alcohol the night before.
- Walk slowly at the top and do not rush up any slope.
- Eat a proper breakfast in Kokernag or Anantnag before the climb.
- If you feel dizzy, sick or very breathless, go down at once. Going lower is the cure.
Anyone with a heart or lung condition, or who has had trouble at altitude before, should speak to a doctor before they plan a trip to Margan Top Kashmir.
Safety Tips for Margan Top Kashmir
The pass is quiet, which is its charm, but it also means help is far away. These habits keep a day trip safe:
- Tell your hotel where you are going and when you expect to be back.
- Download offline maps before Kokernag, because the signal fades on the way up.
- Start early and turn back by early afternoon, whatever the view looks like.
- Do not drive the road at night, and do not try it in or just after heavy rain.
- Ask your driver to check the day’s road status with the local taxi stand before you leave.
- Keep fuel above half a tank from Anantnag onward, because there is no petrol pump on the climb.
Trips like this are easier when someone local handles the checks. That is part of what we do for guests who want Margan Top Kashmir in a longer South Kashmir plan.
Combine Margan Top Kashmir with the Rest of South Kashmir
It sits in the same Kokernag corridor as other places worth adding. If you are in Pahalgam or exploring the Aru Valley, a detour here fits into a South Kashmir loop. The Aharbal Waterfall guide covers another stop that pairs well on a longer offbeat trip. If you want a second quiet valley, see our Keran Valley travel guide. Why Visit Margan Top Kashmir with a Local Operator
It is not a place we would send anyone to blind. The road past Kokernag needs a driver who knows its current condition, not last season’s, since washouts and landslides are common at this height. It is also not somewhere to be stuck without a plan if the weather turns, or unsure which activities are allowed.
We are based in Srinagar and fold Margan Top Kashmir into customized Kashmir holiday packages and our offbeat Kashmir tour package (6 nights, 7 days), whether as a day trip from Pahalgam or as part of a longer South Kashmir stay.
