How to Reach Kashmir from Delhi
By flight (best option)
Direct flights from Delhi to Srinagar take about 1.5 to 2 hours over roughly 650 km in a straight line. Since June 2025 you can reach Srinagar by train, but it is done in two legs.
- Leg 1, Delhi to Katra. Vande Bharat 22439 leaves New Delhi early in the morning and reaches Katra in the afternoon, about 8 hours later. It does not run on Wednesdays. Overnight trains also run on this route.
- Leg 2, Katra to Srinagar. The Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat takes around 3 hours. A morning service (26401) and an afternoon one (26403) run, and each skips one day a week. Reports say these trains have been extended to start at Jammu Tawi in 2026, so check the latest timetable.
Door to door, plan on about 12 hours with the change at Katra. These seats sell out early, so book on IRCTC the day the window opens and check the timings again before you travel. A direct overnight Delhi to Srinagar sleeper Vande Bharat has been announced, but as far as we know it is not running yet. A train-based Delhi to Kashmir tour package suits travellers who dislike flying, as long as they accept the long day.
By road
Driving from Delhi to Srinagar is about 800 to 870 km on NH-44 and takes 16 to 20 hours with stops. It breaks into three stages:
- Delhi to Jammu: around 580 km, mostly four-lane highway. Many drivers halt for breakfast at the Murthal dhabas, about 40 km out of Delhi.
- Jammu to Banihal: roughly 155 km of steeper, winding road through Udhampur and Ramban.
- Banihal to Srinagar: about 130 km, through the Jawahar Tunnel below Banihal Pass in the Pir Panjal range, then down into the valley’s orchards and paddy fields.
Try to cross Jammu to Banihal in daylight. It can see landslide delays in July and August and icy patches from November to March. April to June and September to October are the most reliable months. Day 1: Delhi to Srinagar. Take a morning flight and meet your driver at Srinagar airport. Check in to a Dal Lake houseboat, then visit the Mughal gardens, Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, in the afternoon. End the day with a sunset shikara ride. Night in Srinagar.

Day 4: Gulmarg to Pahalgam. This is the longest drive of the trip, around 4.5 to 5 hours via Srinagar, so we start after breakfast. Check in to a riverside hotel on the Lidder. Night in Pahalgam.

Day 6: Pahalgam to Srinagar. A 95 km drive of about 3 hours. Spend the afternoon in the old city market, where papier-mache and walnut wood work are the best buys. Night in Srinagar.
