Kashmir in winter changes a lot from one month to the next. November is quiet and cold, with little snow in the towns. December brings the first real snow. January is the coldest and busiest month, February is often the calmest time to see snow, and by March the Valley starts to turn green again. This guide takes each month in turn, so you can match your dates to the trip you want, whether you are travelling from India or from abroad.
We are a local team based in Srinagar. The dates and temperatures below come from weather reports and tourism sources, and where sources disagree we show the range. Nothing about Kashmir in winter is guaranteed, least of all snow, so each month also says what to do if the weather does not help. For permits, destinations and planning outside winter, see our Ultimate Kashmir Travel Guide 2026. If you already know your dates and want a priced plan, our Kashmir winter tour packages page lists four snow plans with inclusions and payment terms.

How the Kashmir in Winter Calendar Works
Locals divide Kashmir in winter into traditional phases. For 2026-27 they fall like this:
- Chillai Kalan, the harshest 40 days: December 21, 2026 to about January 30, 2027.
- Chillai Khurd, the “small cold” of 20 days: January 31 to February 19.
- Chillai Bachha, the “baby cold” of 10 days: from February 20.
Most reports we checked put the end of Chillai Kalan at about January 30, and a few quote January 31, so treat the last day as approximate. Our Chillai Kalan guide covers dates, night temperatures and costs for the coldest weeks in more detail.
These phases describe cold, not snow, and Kashmir in winter rarely follows the calendar exactly. Snow arrives in spells, and the gaps between spells can be long. A cold week does not mean a snowy week, and a dry January is possible. Warm Kashmiri food is part of the season, and our Kashmir cuisine guide lists 15 dishes to try, and our what is Wazwan post explains the famous feast.
November in Kashmir: The Quiet Start
Kashmir in winter really begins in December, so early November still carries the tail of autumn. Chinar leaves linger for the first days, then fall. Days are cool, about 4 C to 14 C (one guide puts the low end nearer 2 C), and nights drop close to freezing by the end of the month. Snow in Srinagar is unlikely. The high reaches can see their first snow late in the month. Gulmarg got its first snow of the 2023 season on November 10, but that is early, not typical.
Best for: quiet trips, lower prices and photography early in the month.
Skip it if: you came for snow or skiing, because Kashmir in winter has barely started in November. The Gulmarg ski season generally runs from mid-December, and November skiing depends on whether enough snow has fallen. Local operators warn that guests who book November for “early snow” often leave disappointed.
Check: heating in your hotel or houseboat. A November night in an unheated room is long and cold, so ask before you book. If you want a houseboat night, our heritage houseboat stay on Dal Lake page explains what to ask about, and our luxury houseboat packages on Dal Lake cover the premium options.
Roads: Mughal Road can close after the first heavy snow.
For weather, what is open and a five-day plan for the first cold month, see our Kashmir in November guide.
December in Kashmir: The First Real Snow
December is when Kashmir in winter finally looks like the postcards, but the month has two halves. From December 1 to 20 the Valley builds up to winter. Gulmarg’s first snow usually comes between about December 10 and mid-December, though it can come earlier or later, so early December is a gamble. Days are about 1 C to 8 C (some sources go up to 10 C), and nights fall below zero across the Valley. Most of the early snow builds up from mid-December to mid-January.
December 21 starts Chillai Kalan and the festive rush. From then until about January 10 is peak season. Hotels fill, prices rise, and gala dinners on December 24 or 25 and December 31 are usually compulsory, billed directly by the hotel. Our Christmas and New Year in Kashmir package explains these extra costs. In December 2025, news reports said Chillai Kalan opened with fresh snow in Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, but that is not something to count on every year.
Best for: first snow, festive trips, early skiing in the second half of the month.
Skip it if: you need guaranteed snow before December 15, because even Kashmir in winter makes no promises.
Check: whether your hotel charges a gala dinner and a peak surcharge.
For a full breakdown of weather, road conditions and what stays open, see our detailed guide to travelling in Kashmir in December.
January in Kashmir: Peak Winter
January is the coldest month for Kashmir in winter and the one most travellers aim for. Srinagar nights are about -2 C to -6 C, and cold waves can push them lower, to about -8.5 C in one very cold year. Gulmarg nights run about -4 C to -8 C and Pahalgam about -5 C to -8 C. A few operators quote Gulmarg lows near -15 C. Treat that as the extreme end, not the usual.
This is the best month for snow-covered scenery. Gulmarg sits high enough to hold snow when Srinagar has none, and powder skiing is best from mid-January into February. The Igloo Cafe in Gulmarg usually opens around January 10 and runs to mid-March, though there is no official date list, and it is normally closed at Christmas and New Year. In cold years the edges of Dal Lake freeze. Full freezes are rare, and you should never walk on the ice. Our frozen Dal Lake guide explains which years froze and why.
Do not assume snow on your exact dates. In early January 2026 forecasters expected about three dry weeks. In winter 2024-25 a dry spell of about 50 days ended only around February 20, and the Khelo India Winter Games at Gulmarg were postponed for lack of snow. Build one spare day into any January plan, because the best Kashmir in winter trips are the ones with room to move.
Best for: snow, skiing, the Gondola, the Igloo Cafe.
Skip it if: you dislike crowds or need a low budget.
Check: book hotels, houseboats and Gulmarg Gondola tickets at least a month ahead. Our Gulmarg Gondola ticket booking guide shows the official steps. For the coldest weeks in detail, read our Kashmir in January 2027 guide.
February in Kashmir: The Sweet Spot
Chillai Khurd starts on January 31. The snow that fell in December and January usually holds, so skiing stays good through the month. Crowds are thinner than in January, which makes Kashmir in winter easier to enjoy. A local operator calls early February the sweet spot, with good snow cover, fewer people and calmer roads than peak January in most years.
Do not assume February is warm. Nights stay below zero and days are about 0 C to 10 C. Roads can still close after a fresh storm. Chillai Bachha begins on February 20, and by the end of the month there are more sunny days. The Igloo Cafe is still open, and the hills still look white even when the Valley floor starts to thaw.
Best for: skiing, honeymooners who want snow without the New Year crowd, photographers.
Skip it if: you want deep snow in Srinagar itself, since Kashmir in winter keeps its best snow in the hills.
Check: weather forecasts for the week before you fly.
For a closer look at the calmest month, see our Kashmir in February guide.
March in Kashmir: Winter Fades, Spring Starts
March days are about 5 C to 14 C. Srinagar and the lower valleys usually lose their snow well before the month ends. Higher places such as Gulmarg can hold snow into March, and fresh spells sometimes arrive, but nobody should promise you March snow. The ski season runs into early April in some years.
March is where Kashmir in winter hands over to spring, and it belongs to blossom. Almond trees at Badamwari in Srinagar were in bloom by about March 10 in 2026. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden opened on March 16, 2026, earlier than usual because of warm weather, compared with about March 26 the year before. It stays open for little over a month, with peak bloom around late March and early April. Opening dates shift every year, so check before you book. Our Tulip Garden guide has the details. The Mughal gardens stay open all year.
Best for: tulips, mild days, a last look at snow in Gulmarg.
Skip it if: snow is the whole point of your trip, because Kashmir in winter is nearly over by then.
Roads: Zojila and Mughal Road usually reopen in spring, but dates vary each year.
Kashmir in Winter by Place: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg
The same week of Kashmir in winter feels very different from one place to the next.
| Place | Winter nights | Snow | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Srinagar | About -2 C to -6 C | Light and patchy; some winters almost none | Dal Lake, Mughal gardens and shikara rides all work in winter; fog can delay flights |
| Gulmarg | About -4 C to -8 C | Deepest and most reliable | Gondola and skiing; 4×4 or snow chains needed from Tangmarg on snow days |
| Pahalgam | About -5 C to -8 C | Good cover in January and February | Quieter than Gulmarg; a calm base for snow walks |
| Sonamarg | Very cold | Heavy in the high reaches | Reachable through the Z-Morh tunnel, but weather dependent |
For more on each place in Kashmir in winter, see our Gulmarg destination guide, our Gulmarg ski destination guide, our Pahalgam travel guide and our guide to Sonamarg in winter. For what is open in Pahalgam month by month, read Pahalgam in winter, and for the town itself see our Sonmarg destination guide. If you want a ready plan for the quieter valley, see our Pahalgam tour packages.
Srinagar to Gulmarg is about 45 to 50 km. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours normally and 2 to 2.5 hours in winter. Srinagar-registered cars may be stopped at Tangmarg on snow days, so many guests change to a local 4×4 there. Gulmarg to Pahalgam is a long winter day, often 4 to 5 hours depending on traffic, so do not try to do both in one day.
Roads, Flights and Closures Month by Month
Roads decide how smooth Kashmir in winter feels, so check closures before you travel.
| Month | What can close or slow down |
|---|---|
| November | Mughal Road after the first heavy snow; early snow near Zojila |
| December | Zojila, Mughal Road and Sinthan Top in heavy snow; Tangmarg to Gulmarg on snow days |
| January | Zojila, Mughal Road, the Gurez road and Sinthan Top in heavy snow; fog delays at Srinagar airport |
| February | Same as January after fresh storms |
| March | Gradual reopening of high roads; dates vary |
The Jammu-Srinagar highway is the all-weather road, but avoid driving it at night. The Srinagar-Leh road over Zojila is closed for long stretches in winter, so check Ladakh Tourism and local notices if Ladakh is part of your plan. Our Srinagar to Leh road trip guide has the route details, and our Leh Ladakh tour packages page shows what we plan once the passes reopen. For other advisories, the J&K Tourism website is the official source. The Sinthan Top and Gurez roads matter most for Kashmir in winter, so read our Sinthan Top guide and our Gurez Valley guide for the routes.

Kashmir in Winter for Foreign Tourists
Kashmir in winter works well for visitors from abroad, but a few rules differ from domestic travel. Most problems come from paperwork and timing, not from the cold.
Documents. Carry your original passport and a valid Indian visa for the whole trip, plus a digital copy and paper copies. Hotels ask for them at check-in. Our guide for foreign tourists in Kashmir has the details.
The Gondola rule. Under the rule reported from December 2024, the travel agency emails each visitor’s full name and passport number to the J&K Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) at least two days before the ride, and the gate checks that your ID matches the ticket. That means foreign guests planning Kashmir in winter should send passport details when they book, not on the day. Tatkal tickets open daily at 5 PM for next-day travel, which is too late for a two-day notice, so do not plan a foreign group’s Gondola day around them. The official portal and notices are on the JKCCC website, and the portal price at checkout is the final fare.
Restricted areas. Rules for places such as Gurez differ for Indian and foreign nationals, and sources disagree on the details. Confirm with us before you plan any border-area day.
Budget. International marketplaces list six-day winter Kashmir tours from about US$700, so compare what is included in each Kashmir in winter plan before you decide. We quote land-only prices in rupees, and our team can explain what each plan covers.
Timing. Fog can delay flights into Srinagar, so do not book a tight onward international connection on the same day. Bring layers from home, because winter gear is easier to buy before you land than to match in a hurry, and check that your travel insurance covers winter sports if you plan to ski.
Costs for Kashmir in Winter, Crowds and Booking Windows
Prices for Kashmir in winter move with the calendar, and the Christmas and New Year window costs the most.
| Window | Crowds | Prices | Book ahead |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | Low | Lowest | 1 to 2 weeks |
| December 1 to 20 | Low to medium | Moderate | 2 to 3 weeks |
| December 21 to January 10 | Very high | Peak | 4 to 6 weeks |
| January 11 to February | High, then medium | High, then moderate | 3 to 4 weeks |
| March | Low, rising for tulips | Moderate | 2 to 3 weeks |
Our land-only packages start from Rs 10,500 per person for 4 nights and 5 days, Rs 12,500 for 5 nights and 6 days, and Rs 15,500 for 6 nights and 7 days, twin sharing. Premium and heritage stays start from about Rs 22,000, and our luxury Kashmir tour packages cover that range. Peak dates cost more. Other operators list roughly Rs 13,000 for a 2-night Gulmarg weekend and Rs 23,000 to 30,000 for 4 to 5 nights, and rates change at booking, so compare what each price includes.
We confirm a booking with a 25% advance, and the payment and cancellation terms for winter dates are on the winter page. For a wider cost breakdown, see our Kashmir trip cost for 5 days page.
If you are flying in for Kashmir in winter from a big city, our city pages explain flight times and fares for Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Maharashtra, Mumbai, Kerala and Jaipur.
A Flexible Plan for Each Month
Here is how we would shape a Kashmir in winter trip for each window.
| Window | Length | Base | Weather backup |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 5 to 6 days | Srinagar, Pahalgam | Move Gulmarg to the sunniest day |
| December 1 to 20 | 5 days | Srinagar, Gulmarg | Keep one buffer day |
| December 21 to January 10 | 5 to 6 days | Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam | Book the Gondola for the middle days |
| January 11 to February | 5 days | Srinagar, Gulmarg | Leave day 4 free for snow or road delays |
| March | 5 to 6 days | Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg | Swap gardens and snow as the weather turns |
A good rule is to put Gulmarg in the middle of the trip, not on the first or last day. That way a storm or a fog delay does not cost you the whole point of the trip.
Our Srinagar Gulmarg Pahalgam tour package is the classic three-town circuit, and our customized Kashmir holiday packages page shows how we build a plan around your dates. For a quick snow break, many travellers pick our 3 nights 4 days Kashmir tour package or our 4 nights 5 days Kashmir tour package and add a spare day for flight or road delays. When you are ready, our Kashmir tour package booking page explains the steps.
Winter Safety Tips for Kashmir in Winter
Kashmir in winter is safe for prepared travellers, but a few risks are specific to the cold. For a detailed look at avalanche warnings, black ice, power cuts and medical help, see is Kashmir safe in winter.
- Ventilate any room with a fire or heater. Heater and kangri fumes are a real risk in closed rooms.
- Watch for black ice on mornings after snow, and avoid night drives.
- Frozen pipes can cut water for a few hours in very cold spells.
- Stay off frozen lakes and rivers.
- Do not ski off the marked slopes without a certified guide.
- Carry ID, with two paper copies and a digital copy. Indian visitors carry a government photo ID, and foreign nationals carry passport and visa.
Our Kashmir winter packing guide has the full kit list for Kashmir in winter.
Who Should Skip Kashmir in Winter
Kashmir in winter is not right for everyone. Skip it if you cannot cope with sub-zero nights, if you have only two or three days, or if you have a tight flight connection after the trip. It is also a poor fit if you need Zojila, the Gurez road or the Mughal Road to be open, or if you want guaranteed snow on one exact day. If you want green meadows, go in April to June instead.
Common Mistakes
Most problems with Kashmir in winter come from a short list of repeat mistakes.
- Booking November for snow.
- Giving Gulmarg only one night and no spare day.
- Packing for cold days but not for cold nights.
- Assuming Dal Lake freezes every year.
- Buying a prepaid SIM outside J&K. Prepaid cards from outside the Valley usually do not work, so buy a local SIM with ID.
- Trusting touts at the Gondola base who quote inflated “official” prices.
Plan Your Kashmir in Winter Trip
Whichever month you choose for Kashmir in winter, pick your window from the tables above and then tell us your dates. We will suggest a Kashmir in winter plan that fits the month, with a spare day for weather. Gurez is the exception, because the road over Razdan Pass usually closes for much of winter and even in low-snow years it shuts on bad-weather days, so plan Gurez for late spring to autumn using our best time to visit Gurez Valley guide. Our Gurez Valley in winter guide explains the closures in detail.
