Kashmir in November sits between autumn and winter, and it changes week by week. The first half still has chinar colour and the saffron harvest. The second half is colder, quieter and cheaper, with the first snow on the high slopes. Srinagar stays dry and cold. Gulmarg and Sonamarg are where snow can start. This guide tells you what is open, what is closed, how cold it gets and how to plan five days, so you can pick your dates with open eyes.

We are a local team in Srinagar, so we plan Kashmir in November around the real road and weather conditions. For the whole cold season, see our Kashmir winter tour packages and our Kashmir in winter overview. If you are ready to book, our Kashmir tour package booking page shows how to send your dates.

Is Kashmir in November a Good Time to Visit?

Yes, if you want a quiet, cold trip and you accept that snow is never promised. November is not the month for a guaranteed snow holiday. December to February is more reliable, and our guide to the best time to visit Kashmir for snowfall explains why.

Kashmir in November splits into two halves. Choose your half before you choose your hotel.

First half (1 to 15 November)Second half (16 to 30 November)
Chinar and autumn colourBestFading or bare
Saffron harvestUsually onEnding

If you love colour and photographs, go early. If you want early snow and a calm valley, go late.

Kashmir in November vs December

Many guests ask if they should wait a few weeks for the snow. Here is how Kashmir in November compares with the month after it.

NovemberDecember
Snow oddsUpper slopes, meadow late in the monthBetter, strongest after 21 December
CrowdsFestival peaks, then calmLight early, heavy from 21 December
PricesLower outside festival weeksHigher from 21 December to 10 January

If snow matters most, read our Kashmir in December guide. If you want colour, food and a lower bill, Kashmir in November is the smarter pick.

Kashmir in November: Weather and Temperature

Weather guides for Kashmir in November do not agree on exact numbers, so use ranges. Most put Srinagar days at about 10 C to 15 C and nights at about 0 C to 4 C. Gulmarg and Sonamarg are several degrees colder. Mornings can be foggy on Dal Lake, and the sun feels warm for a few hours at midday. After sunset the cold arrives fast.

Rain is possible at any point, and a wet spell at lower levels often means snow higher up. Plan with a buffer, because the weather can change overnight.

Does It Snow in Kashmir in November?

Snow in Kashmir in November is possible, but not certain. Here is the usual pattern by place.

PlaceSnow in November
Srinagar and Dal LakeVery unlikely; cold and dry
Pahalgam townMostly dry; snow on the upper valleys
GulmargUpper slopes white by mid-month; first snow in the meadow often in the second half
SonamargSnow later in the month; road access can change after heavy snow

Treat any promised snow date with suspicion. Snow that falls and snow that stays on the ground are different things, and a dry week can melt a light dusting in hours. If snow is the whole point of your trip, consider moving your dates to December.

7 Best Things to Do in Kashmir in November

These are the things worth your time in Kashmir in November, in a sensible order.

  1. Chinar colour at the Mughal gardens. The chinar leaves turn red and gold in late October and early November. Visit Nishat, Shalimar and the lakeshore early, before the crowds and the haze. Our autumn in Kashmir guide shows the best spots.
  2. Pampore saffron fields. The crocus fields are about 15 km from Srinagar, a half-hour drive. Pickers work early in the morning, so go early. In a dry autumn the daily harvest can last only a couple of hours, as a National Geographic report on the saffron harvest explains. Ask us before you go, because the timing changes every year.
  3. A shikara ride at dawn. Dal Lake is quiet and misty in November. Wear a warm layer, because the water makes it colder than it looks.
  4. The Gulmarg Gondola for early snow. The upper slopes are the best bet for snow. The Gondola depends on weather, so keep a spare day. For a longer plan, read our winter ski trip to Gulmarg guide.
  5. A slow day in Pahalgam. Betaab Valley and the Lidder River look their best in early November. Aru can be snowed in after a cold spell.
  6. The old city on foot. Walk, eat and shop. Hot kahwa with saffron suits the evening cold. See our Kashmir cuisine guide for what to order, including what is Wazwan.
  7. A houseboat evening. The cold makes a heated houseboat feel special. Read about our Dal Lake luxury houseboat packages and the heritage houseboat stay, and ask about heating before you book.

Diwali, Guru Nanak Jayanti and Crowds

Dates change crowds more than weather does. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, and many families travel in the days around it. Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026, and that weekend can fill hotels in Srinagar and Gulmarg. Book early if your dates touch either one. Festival weeks are the one time Kashmir in November feels busy.

Outside those windows, November is one of the quieter months. Hotels have rooms, cabs are easy to find and sights have short queues.

Sample 5-Day Plan for Kashmir in November

This plan fits the first half of the month. For the second half, swap the saffron morning for a second Gulmarg day.

Day 1: Srinagar. Arrive, rest and visit a Mughal garden for chinar colour. Take a short shikara ride before sunset.

Day 2: Pampore and the old city. Visit the saffron fields early. Spend the afternoon in the old city, and have kahwa in the evening.

Day 3: Gulmarg. Leave early. Ride the Gondola if the weather allows. Return to Srinagar before dark, or stay a night.

Day 4: Pahalgam. Drive to Pahalgam and spend the day at Betaab Valley and the Lidder River. Stay a night.

Day 5: Departure. Return to Srinagar after breakfast. Keep a buffer for fog and road delays.

Our 4 nights 5 days Kashmir tour package follows this shape. If you have less time, see our 3 nights 4 days Kashmir tour package. For a slower trip with children, our Kashmir family tour package with price adds a day and shows costs.

How to Reach and Get Around Kashmir in November

By air: Fly into Srinagar airport. Fog can delay flights on some mornings, so never plan a tight same-day connection on your last day.

By road inside the valley: Roads to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Pampore stay open in November. Light snow at Gulmarg may need chains for the last stretch. Drive only in daylight. The Mughal Road and the Zojila stretch of the Srinagar to Leh road can close after the first heavy snow, so check before you plan any Ladakh leg, and read our Srinagar to Leh road trip guide for the season.

Local taxi rules: A Srinagar cab can drop you in Pahalgam or Sonamarg, but local sightseeing there needs a local union taxi. Ask for the rate card at the stand.

Where to Stay and What to Ask About Heating

Hotels and houseboats work well for Kashmir in November if the heating works. Our packages use centralised heated hotel rooms, but ask these questions of any operator before you pay:

  • Does the room have a heater or a bukhari, and is it fitted in the room you are booking?
  • Is hot water available all day?
  • Is the hotel on the main road, away from a slope that ices over?
  • What is the plan if snow blocks the road on arrival day?

Ventilate any room with a fire or heater. Never sleep in a closed room with a coal fire. For more on heating and road risks, read our guide on how safe Kashmir is in winter.

Kashmir in November for Foreign Travellers

Kashmir in November works well for visitors from the UK, US, Australia, the Gulf and Southeast Asia, and it is a calm month for a first India trip. Our foreign tourists in Kashmir page has the full checklist.

  • Arrival: Fly into Srinagar airport. We arrange the road transfer.
  • Visa: You need a valid Indian visa before you travel. Apply through the official Indian e-visa portal and carry printed copies.
  • Permits: We know of no special permit for the main Kashmir valley for foreign nationals. Carry your passport and visa copies, because hotels and checkpoints ask for them.
  • Gondola: Foreign visitors need their travel agency to send full names and passport numbers to the cable car company at least two days before the ride, and the gate checks that your ID matches the ticket. Tell us your passport details early.
  • Money: Cards often fail in smaller shops and for local taxis. Carry enough Indian rupees in cash.
  • SIM cards: Rules for tourist SIMs change, so ask us or your hotel what is current before you arrive.
  • Insurance: Buy travel insurance that covers delays and medical care in cold weather, and check your own government’s travel advisory.
  • Food: Vegetarian meals are easy to arrange. Tell your hotel when you book.

Costs, Payment and Cancellation for Kashmir in November

What to Pack for Kashmir in November

Pack for cold mornings and warm middays. The right layers make Kashmir in November easy. Bring thermals, a warm mid layer, a windproof jacket, a woollen cap, gloves and waterproof shoes with grip. If you plan to go up to Gulmarg, add insulated boots. Our Kashmir winter packing guide has the full list.

Safety and Road Notes

These notes keep Kashmir in November simple and safe.

  • Black ice: Shaded roads and paths can freeze after sunset and early in the morning. Wear shoes with grip.
  • Daylight: It fades by about 5 to 5:30 pm. Do not drive at night.
  • Checkpoints: Carry photo ID and follow police instructions.
  • Heaters: Ventilate any room with a fire or heater.
  • Buffer day: Keep a spare day if you have a fixed flight home.

Who Kashmir in November Is Not For

Kashmir in November is a good trip for the right guest and a poor one for the wrong guest.

  • Guests who want guaranteed snow. Choose December to February instead.
  • Skiers. The ski season is not ready. See our Gulmarg winter ski guide for the proper months.
  • Guests who need Baisaran or Chandanwari. Baisaran is closed in the latest reports, and Chandanwari’s status is unclear.
  • Travellers who feel the cold badly. Nights are cold, and some rooms have weak heating.
  • Anyone with a tight schedule. Fog and snow can delay flights and roads.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Most problems with Kashmir in November come from planning, not weather.

  • Booking for snow alone. Plan chinar, saffron, food and a slow pace so the trip works without snow.
  • Skipping the heater question. Confirm heating before you pay for the room.
  • Ignoring the festival dates. Diwali week and the Guru Nanak Jayanti weekend sell out.
  • Using old blogs. Many were written before April 2025 and show outdated access and rules.
  • Planning a day around Baisaran. It was closed in the latest reports.
  • Night driving. Light fades early.
