Spending Christmas and New Year in Kashmir is a different trip from a normal winter visit. It is shorter, it is booked further ahead, and it lands in the most expensive week of the ski season. If you are deciding whether to spend Christmas and New Year in Kashmir this year, this guide explains what changes in that window, what happened in recent winters, and how to plan around it for the 2026-27 season.

We are a local Srinagar operator, so we have kept this practical: weather, dates, costs, payment terms, train and road options, snow conditions and who this trip suits. For the wider winter picture, see our Kashmir winter tour packages, or read Kashmir in winter, month by month if you are still choosing a month. Travelling over the holidays? Why This Window Is Different

Late December and the first days of January bring the highest hotel and gondola demand of the season. Everyone wants the same picture, with fresh snow, string lights and a warm cafe, on the same few dates. On Christmas Eve in 2023, local tourism officials reported more than 10,000 visitors in Gulmarg in a single day, roughly double the usual daily figure. That means:

  • For Christmas and New Year in Kashmir, hotels fill weeks in advance, especially anything near the gondola base in Gulmarg.
  • Gondola tickets sell out on good snow days, so pre-booking is not optional the way it can be in a quiet February week.
  • Prices for Christmas and New Year in Kashmir are at their peak for the year, on par with or above the January powder rush.
  • Snow is not guaranteed this early. Mid-December can still be building toward full winter, so a trip at the start of the window can be greener than the same trip two weeks later.

None of this means you should skip Christmas and New Year in Kashmir. It means you should book early and set your expectations correctly, which is what most generic “Kashmir in winter” pages skip.

How the 2026-27 Calendar Falls

The calendar matters because Indian long weekends drive demand. These bands are our own reading of how the dates fall, not a published rate card.

DatesDay of weekWhat to expect
December 15 to 23Tuesday to the next WednesdayQuieter and cheaper. First snow in Gulmarg is usually around mid-December and cover can be thin. Chillai Kalan begins on December 21 with colder nights
December 24 to 27Thursday to SundayChristmas falls on a Friday, which makes a long weekend. Expect crowds, and a gala dinner at many hotels on December 25
December 28 to 30Monday to WednesdayStill busy, with slightly more room to move. Good for travellers who want to be in place before New Year’s Eve
December 31 to January 3Thursday to SundayNew Year’s Eve on a Thursday and January 1 on a Friday create a second long weekend. Resort hotels hold New Year’s Eve dinners, and prices are the highest of the season
January 4 to 10Monday to SundayCrowds thin and rates ease. The snowpack is often better than in mid-December

If your dates are flexible, shifting the whole trip by a few days, for example arriving on December 28 instead of December 24, often changes the bill more than any other choice you make.

Weather and Snow: What to Expect by Date

Winter here is divided into named periods, and that matters for this trip. Chillai Kalan, the 40-day period of the harshest cold, starts on December 21 and runs to January 31, so a trip for Christmas and New Year in Kashmir falls right at the start of it. For dates, night temperatures and road conditions across the whole period, see our Chillai Kalan guide.

If snow on Christmas Day matters to you, the later dates in the window are safer than the earlier ones, because the snowpack is often better in the first week of January than in mid-December. For a month-by-month view of the whole season, read our guide to the best time to visit Kashmir for snowfall.

What Last Winter Showed

Last winter is a good reminder, for anyone planning Christmas and New Year in Kashmir, that snow cannot be promised. Gulmarg had a slow start to the 2025-26 season until a major snowfall arrived in the last week of December. Greater Kashmir then reported hotels at full occupancy, with many booked until the end of January. Nobody could have known that in advance, which is why flexible dates and a longer stay protect you better than any promise about snow.

What the Trip Usually Looks Like

Most travellers who spend Christmas and New Year in Kashmir split their time between Srinagar and Gulmarg rather than choosing one.

The Srinagar Leg

Srinagar is where you settle in. Plan for a houseboat stay on Dal Lake, a shikara ride and the Mughal Gardens. In cold years the edges of the lake can freeze, and our frozen Dal Lake guide explains when and how this happens. Never walk on the ice, even on a cold morning. For a stay that suits the season, see our heritage houseboat stay on Dal Lake or our luxury houseboat packages on Dal Lake. Winter houseboat rates are usually lower than in summer, but Christmas and New Year in Kashmir dates are the exception, so ask for the exact rate.

The Gulmarg Leg

Gulmarg is where the winter holiday happens, and our Gulmarg travel guide covers the town in more detail. You can ski, snowboard or just ride the gondola for the view, and several resort hotels run their own New Year’s Eve dinner with live music and bonfires. If skiing is the main reason you are coming, our guide to planning a winter ski trip to Gulmarg covers lessons, gear and costs, and our page on Gulmarg: Asia’s Premier Ski Destination explains the lifts and terrain. If you want the whole Gulmarg leg of Christmas and New Year in Kashmir packaged, see our Gulmarg tour packages.

A Note on the Igloo Cafe

Many guests ask about the Igloo Cafe in Gulmarg. It usually opens around January 10 and runs to about mid-March, so it is normally not open during Christmas and New Year in Kashmir. If you are travelling on those dates, plan other evening activities, or shift your trip to the second week of January.

Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Gurez

Pahalgam is calmer than Gulmarg in the festive week and works well as a third stop on a Christmas and New Year in Kashmir plan. Our Pahalgam travel guide and Pahalgam tour packages show what a winter stay there looks like, and our guide to Pahalgam in winter explains what is open month by month. Sonamarg is covered in our Sonamarg in winter guide and our Sonmarg destination guide, and it depends on the weather. Gurez roads can close for long stretches, so read our Gurez Valley in winter page before considering it.

Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve: What Actually Happens

Many first-time visitors expect a large festival. The reality of Christmas and New Year in Kashmir is smaller and warmer.

Christmas Day. Kashmir has a small Christian community, and Christmas is quiet in Srinagar. In 2025 the J&K Tourism Department held Christmas celebrations at a historic church in Gulmarg, widely known as St. Mary’s Church, built in 1902, with local Christians and visitors attending. Most visitors mark the day with a gala dinner at their hotel.

New Year’s Eve. Gulmarg is the centre of celebrations. In past years the tourism department has planned musical evenings, firecracker shows, night skiing and torch skiing, and resort hotels run their own dinners with live music, bonfires and sometimes fireworks.

Plans can change. At the end of 2024, official New Year events in Gulmarg were scaled back during a period of national mourning, although hotels still ran their own parties. Treat any event listing as likely, not certain, and ask your hotel what it has actually confirmed.

If you want a quieter Christmas and New Year in Kashmir, choose Pahalgam or a houseboat in Srinagar and go to Gulmarg for a day on January 1 or 2.

Sample 5-Day Itinerary

This is a sample plan for Christmas and New Year in Kashmir. We adjust it to your arrival date and the weather.

Day 1 (around December 30): Arrive in Srinagar. Check in to your houseboat or hotel, rest, and spend the evening in the old city markets.

Day 2: Srinagar sightseeing and drive to Gulmarg. Visit the Mughal Gardens, take a shikara ride on Dal Lake, and drive to Gulmarg in the afternoon.

Day 3 (December 31): A day on the slopes. Ski, snowboard or take the gondola for the views. In the evening, enjoy a New Year’s Eve dinner at your hotel.

Day 4 (January 1): A slow morning. Take an optional second gondola ride, then drive back to Srinagar.

Day 5: Departure. Transfer to the airport with enough time to spare.

Honest Notes on Pacing

This Christmas and New Year in Kashmir plan is tight, with two long days of travel and only one full day in Gulmarg. The drive from Srinagar to Gulmarg is about 50 km and takes 2 to 2.5 hours in winter. If you want more time on the mountain, or if you want to see Pahalgam or Sonamarg, add one to two nights.

A 6 or 7-day version gives you a buffer for snow and a rest day. Sonamarg depends on the weather and should be treated as optional. If you would rather start from a standard plan, our 4 nights and 5 days Kashmir tour package and 5 nights and 6 days Kashmir tour package show the usual shape, and we adjust either one for festive dates. If your dates are flexible, our Kashmir in November guide shows a quieter, cheaper time to visit before the festive rush.

Extending the Trip: 6 and 7-Day Options

Most people who plan Christmas and New Year in Kashmir for five days wish they had one more night. A longer plan fixes the pacing and gives you a weather buffer.

  • 6 days and 5 nights. Add a second night in Gulmarg, so you get two ski or gondola days and a rest day between them. For Christmas and New Year in Kashmir, this is the plan we suggest first.
  • 7 days and 6 nights. Add Pahalgam, with a night in the Lidder valley and a quiet day by the river. Pahalgam is calmer and less crowded than Gulmarg in the festive week.
  • Sonamarg. It is reachable through the Z-Morh tunnel but depends on the weather. Treat it as a bonus, not a fixed stop.

A longer trip also costs less per day, because the peak surcharge applies to fewer of your nights.

Our Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam tour package follows this route, and our winter packages hub shows how the longer winter plans are built.

Getting There: Flights, Train and Road

For Christmas and New Year in Kashmir, how you reach Srinagar matters more than in a quiet week, because everything is full.

Flights. Fares to Srinagar rise sharply in late December, so book early. Fog and snow can delay or cancel flights, so keep a buffer day before any onward connection.

Train. The Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat takes about three hours, and the trains are built for winter conditions. Seats go quickly, so book as soon as your date opens on IRCTC, and check the current days and timings, because sources differ on which weekday each service skips. In January 2026, when heavy snow closed roads and suspended flights, the railways proposed extra reserved trains on this route, which shows why the rail link is a useful backup.

Road. The Jammu to Srinagar highway is the all-weather road, but it can close after snow or landslides. Avoid night travel.

Zojila. The Srinagar to Leh road over Zojila usually closes in heavy winter snow. If Ladakh is part of your plan, check the Ladakh Tourism website, our guide to the Srinagar to Leh road trip and permit details and our ultimate Ladakh travel guide 2026.

What Is Included and What Is Not

Packages for Christmas and New Year in Kashmir vary by operator and by hotel. These are the items you should ask any operator to state in writing.

Usually included:

  • Accommodation on twin sharing, with breakfast and dinner
  • Private vehicle for transfers and sightseeing
  • Shikara ride on Dal Lake
  • Airport pick-up and drop

Usually not included:

  • Flights and train tickets
  • Gala dinner charges at hotels on December 24, 25 and 31, which are normally billed directly by the hotel
  • Gondola tickets, ski lift passes, ski gear and instructor fees, unless the package says so
  • Sledge rides, snow jeeps and tips
  • Personal expenses and travel insurance

If you want gondola tickets in the package, confirm which phase is included. Our Gulmarg Gondola ticket booking guide explains the phases, fares and Tatkal rules, and the official sales portal is the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car ticket site.

Costs, Gala Dinners and Peak Surcharges

Costs for Christmas and New Year in Kashmir are higher than for a normal winter week. A few things drive that:

  • Peak-date surcharges. Hotels charge more for December 24 to January 2.
  • Compulsory gala dinners. Most hotels charge a fixed menu for Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve, and this is usually added to the bill at the hotel.
  • Room type and location. Rooms near the gondola base cost more than rooms further away.
  • Travel dates. The same hotel can cost noticeably less on December 28 than on December 31.

Our regular winter packages, which sit below the rates for Christmas and New Year in Kashmir, start from about Rs 12,500 per person for 5 nights and 6 days, land only, on twin sharing. Festive dates cost more than this, and we confirm the exact figure when you tell us your dates. Published festive offers from other operators for the 2026-27 dates vary widely. Most group-tour listings we found sit roughly between the mid-Rs 20,000s and the mid-Rs 30,000s per person for five or six days on double or triple sharing, and what each one includes differs. Ask every operator what the gala dinner and surcharges add on top.

For a wider cost breakdown, see our guide to the Kashmir trip cost for 5 days, or our luxury Kashmir tour packages if you want a premium stay.

Payment and Cancellation Terms

Clear terms matter most for Christmas and New Year in Kashmir, when hotels are strict. They are also a sign of a reliable operator. Our usual structure is:

  • 25% advance to confirm the booking
  • 50% due 20 to 29 days before arrival
  • The balance 20 days before arrival

For cancellation, a small fee applies for cancellations 30 days or more before arrival. Between 20 and 30 days the charge is 50%, between 10 and 19 days it is 75%, and under 10 days it is 100%. Festive hotel bookings are often non-refundable, so ask for the exact rule on your dates. Weather and road closures are not covered by a standard policy, so consider travel insurance.

Families, Couples and Groups

A trip for Christmas and New Year in Kashmir suits different groups in different ways.

Families. Plan one big outdoor day, then a quiet one. Children tire fast in the cold, and a warm room matters more than a packed schedule. Our Kashmir family tour package with price page shows how we plan these trips.

Couples. For Christmas and New Year in Kashmir, choose a houseboat night in Srinagar and a quiet stay in Gulmarg. Book New Year’s Eve dinner early, because the best tables go first.

Groups of friends. Rooms and vehicles are easier to arrange when you tell us your numbers early. Ask for written rates for any group above six people.

International guests. Carry your passport and visa, and read our guide for foreign tourists in Kashmir before you book.

If none of the standard plans fits, we build one around your dates through our customized Kashmir holiday packages.

Tips for New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve in Gulmarg is lively, but it is also cold and crowded. A few things help:

  • Confirm your dinner and its price before you travel.
  • Dress for the outdoors, even if the party is inside. Bonfires are warm only if you are close.
  • Do not plan a long drive on the night itself. Roads are icy after dark.
  • Keep a small torch, a power bank and your ID with you.
  • Ask which Kashmiri dishes are on the dinner menu. Our list of Kashmiri dishes worth trying helps you order well.

Common Booking Mistakes

These are the mistakes we see most often when guests plan Christmas and New Year in Kashmir on their own:

  • Booking only the hotel and leaving the gondola, taxi and dinner for later.
  • Choosing a package that does not state the gala dinner charge.
  • Booking a flight out on January 1 with no buffer for weather.
  • Assuming snow on a fixed date, which no operator can promise.
  • Paying in full to an unknown agent. Check reviews before you pay.

Booking Timeline for Christmas and New Year in Kashmir

For a real Christmas and New Year in Kashmir trip, the booking window is 6 to 8 weeks out, not 2. Gulmarg rooms for New Year’s Eve can sell out by early December, and gondola tickets for the same days go fast once the snow reports look good. If you are reading this in October or November for a December trip, you are on a good timeline. If it is already mid-December, call rather than email, because availability changes daily. Want more detail on weather, roads and daylight for the rest of the month? Our guide to Kashmir in December covers it.

It is also worth checking the J&K Tourism website for road and weather advisories before you lock in your dates.

Getting Around in the Snow

Tangmarg to Gulmarg. On snow days the last stretch needs a 4×4 vehicle or snow chains. Local authorities have issued advisories requiring anti-skid chains on this road during snowfall, so ask your driver or operator which they will use.

Zojila, Mughal Road and Gurez. These roads can close in heavy snow, so do not plan around them in this window.

Start early. Winter days are short, and roads on Christmas and New Year in Kashmir dates fill up by midday.

Safety and Health in Winter

Cold. On a Christmas and New Year in Kashmir trip, night temperatures in Gulmarg are well below freezing. Wear layers, cover your hands, ears and face, and come inside if your fingers or toes go numb.

Heaters. Many rooms use a bukhari (wood or charcoal heater) or an electric blower. Keep a window slightly open when a bukhari is burning, and never sleep with a charcoal fire in a closed room.

Altitude. Gulmarg is around 2,650 m and the top gondola station is nearly 4,000 m, so take the first day slowly.

Children and older travellers. On a Christmas and New Year in Kashmir trip, plan lighter days and warm rest breaks.

Who This Trip Is Not For

We would rather be honest than sell a Christmas and New Year in Kashmir trip that does not fit.

  • If you want guaranteed deep snow on a specific date, this window cannot promise it.
  • If you want low prices, Christmas and New Year in Kashmir is the wrong week. Choose a quieter week in February.
  • If you dislike crowds and queues, avoid December 26 to 31, the busiest days of Christmas and New Year in Kashmir.
  • If you want a relaxed itinerary with little driving, a 5-day plan will feel rushed.
  • If you are not comfortable in the cold, read the next sections before deciding.

What to Pack for This Window

For Christmas and New Year in Kashmir, pack the same core layers as for any winter trip to Gulmarg: thermals, a waterproof outer shell, insulated gloves, a warm hat and good boots. December can be colder and windier than people expect, so do not assume it will be mild because it is early in the season. Our Kashmir winter packing guide has the full list, including what to rent and what to bring. Prepaid SIM cards bought outside Jammu and Kashmir usually do not work in the Valley, while postpaid connections do, so sort out your phone plan before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kashmir snowy for Christmas and New Year?

Usually, but not guaranteed — snow can still be building in mid-to-late December depending on the year. January tends to be more reliably deep-snow than the Christmas week itself.

How far in advance should I book a Christmas and New Year in Kashmir trip?

6–8 weeks minimum. Gulmarg hotels and gondola tickets for the New Year’s Eve dates specifically sell out well ahead of the date.

Is Gulmarg or Srinagar better for New Year’s Eve?

Gulmarg has the resort-hotel celebrations, bonfires, and snow setting; Srinagar has the houseboat and old-city charm. Most travelers do both by splitting a 5–7 day trip between the two.

Is Christmas and New Year the most expensive time to visit Kashmir?

It’s one of the two peak-price windows of the year, alongside mid-January to February’s prime ski season. Expect rates noticeably above a quieter November or March trip.
