Kashmir in December is cold, quiet in the first half and busy in the second. Nights drop below freezing, the mountains turn white, and the Valley slows down. It is a good month for snow lovers, but only if you plan for what December really does. Some years the snow arrives early. Some years it comes in the last week.
We are a local team in Srinagar, so we see this every year. This guide covers the weather, the real snow chances, what is open, what costs more and who should skip. It also gives you a simple plan for Kashmir in December 2026 that still works if the snow turns up late.

Kashmir in December Weather
The weather in Kashmir in December changes a lot between the Valley floor and the mountains. Plan for the cold at the place where you will sleep, not the place where you land.
Srinagar: The average December night is about -1.6°C, but cold spells push it lower. On 5 and 6 December 2025, the Met office recorded -4.1°C in Srinagar, according to ETV Bharat. Days on clear afternoons reach about 8°C to 10°C.
Gulmarg: Nights average about -5°C. Gulmarg sits at about 2,650 m, so it feels colder than Srinagar all day.
Pahalgam: Nights average about -4°C, and Pahalgam is often one of the coldest places in the Valley.
Rain and fog: Srinagar gets roughly 70 mm of rain over about five days in December. Morning fog is common and can slow flights.
These are averages, not a forecast for your dates. A normal December can still bring a warm, sunny week or a hard freeze. Check the forecast a few days before you fly, and keep your plan flexible. The weather in Kashmir in December also swings with each western disturbance, the weather system that brings snow to the region, so a dry week can end in a day.
Does It Snow in Kashmir in December?
Yes, but not always when you want it. This is the biggest thing guests get wrong about Kashmir in December.
Gulmarg and the high ridges get the first snow. Early in the season, the peaks often turn white in October or November. The meadow itself, where you actually walk and sledge, needs a proper snowfall. In December 2025, the dry weather lasted until about 21 and 22 December, when Gulmarg finally got its first heavy snow of the season. The same thing happened in early 2024, when a long dry spell hurt skiing for weeks, as the Tribune reported.
So a fair summary is this:
- 1 to 20 December: Snow is possible but far from certain. Some years Gulmarg is white, and some years it is brown with snow only on the peaks.
- 21 to 31 December: The chances are better, because this is when Chillai Kalan starts. Snow is most frequent in the weeks after.
- Srinagar itself: City snow is less common in December. It happens, but it is a bonus.
The Gulmarg ski season officially starts around 15 December. In a dry year, lifts and slopes may open late. If you ski, read our winter ski trip to Gulmarg guide. For a month-by-month view of snow chances, see our best time to visit Kashmir for snowfall guide.
Never book Kashmir in December on a promise of snow. Any operator who guarantees snow on a fixed date is selling hope, not weather. What we can promise is a warm hotel, a flexible plan and an honest call when the forecast changes. Kashmir in December rewards flexible travellers.
Early December vs Late December
The two halves of the month feel like two different trips, so choose by what you want.
Early December (1 to 20): Fewer people, lower hotel rates and clear mornings. It is a good time for a quiet trip, Dal Lake, the old city and food. The risk is that Gulmarg may have little snow on the meadow. If you want guaranteed snow, this is the riskier half.
Late December (21 to 31): Better snow chances, more crowds and higher prices. Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, so many travellers will have a long weekend. Expect full hotels in Gulmarg and Srinagar, longer Gondola queues and higher flight fares. Book early.
Chillai Kalan runs from 21 December 2026 to about 30 January 2027. Our Chillai Kalan guide explains what these 40 days mean for roads, pipes and flights.
Kashmir in December vs January and February
Many guests ask whether they should shift the trip by a few weeks. This table shows how Kashmir in December compares with the two months that follow.
| December | January | February | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crowds | Light early, heavy after 21 December | Busy until about 10 January, then calmer | Calmer, with better rates |
| Snow odds | Mixed, better late in the month | Usually the strongest month | Good, often with clearer days |
| Dal Lake ice | Possible on the coldest nights, but rare | More likely | Possible early in the month |
| Igloo Cafe | Normally closed | Opens from about 10 January | Open |
| Prices | Low before 20 December, high after | High until 10 January | Usually lower |
None of these are promises, because each winter behaves differently. If snow on the meadow matters more to you than festive lights, read our Kashmir in January guide and our Kashmir in February guide before you pick dates. If you want a quiet, lower-priced trip and can live with some risk, Kashmir in December before the 20th is the better fit.
What Is Open and What Is Closed in December
Most of the main places stay open. A few do not. Here is the honest list for Kashmir in December. Check it again a week before you travel, because what is open in Kashmir in December can change after a snowfall.
| Place | Status in December |
|---|---|
| Gulmarg Gondola | Usually open, but wind or snow can pause it for hours |
| Gulmarg town and meadow | Open. Snow depth depends on the year |
| Igloo Cafe Gulmarg | Normally closed until about 10 January |
| Dal Lake shikara rides | Running. Short rides, because daylight ends early |
| Mughal gardens | Open, but chinar trees are bare and fountains are often off |
| Pahalgam town and Betaab Valley | Usually reachable. Local taxis only |
| Baisaran, Chandanwari, Aru | Confirm before you book. Snow can close them for days |
| Sonamarg town | Reachable on most days |
| Sonamarg Zero Point and Thajiwas | Decided day by day |
| Gurez Valley | Often cut off by heavy snow |
| Tulip Garden | Closed. It opens in spring |
For details, see our guides to Sonamarg in winter, Pahalgam in winter and Gurez Valley in winter. The Igloo Cafe Gulmarg guide explains why the cafe opens only after the festive weeks. Planning a spring trip instead? The Srinagar Tulip Garden guide tells you when the blooms arrive.
In Pahalgam and Sonamarg, Srinagar cabs cannot do local sightseeing. You need a local union taxi for Betaab Valley, Aru, Chandanwari, Thajiwas and Zero Point. That is a union rule, so plan for the extra cost.
Dal Lake can freeze on the coldest nights, but that is more likely in January. Our frozen Dal Lake guide explains the odds and the safety rules.
Roads, Flights and Delays
December is when delays start. Here is what to plan for.
Delays are normal in Kashmir in December and rarely ruin a trip when you leave a buffer.
- Fog: Morning fog at Srinagar airport can delay flights. An afternoon flight home gives you a cushion.
- Snow chains: After heavy snow, only 4×4 vehicles or cars with chains are allowed on the Tangmarg to Gulmarg road. You may change to a local snow vehicle at Tangmarg.
- Black ice: Roads freeze at dawn and after sunset. Drivers go slower, and so should you.
- Daylight: The sun sets around 5 pm. Do not plan night drives.
- Mountain passes: The Mughal Road and the Zojila stretch of the Srinagar to Leh road can close after heavy snow, so do not plan an overland Ladakh leg in December. Our Srinagar to Leh road trip guide explains the season and the permits.
- Buffer day: If you have a fixed flight home, add a spare day. This matters most from 21 December.
For the Gondola, read our Gulmarg Gondola ticket booking guide. It explains phases, Tatkal slots and refunds. Phase 2 needs a valid Phase 1 ticket. You can also check live notices on the official Gondola notice site.
Crowds and Prices in Kashmir in December
December is not one price. It is two. The cost of Kashmir in December depends mostly on the date, the hotel and the car.
Before about 20 December, hotels are easier to book and rates are lower. From 21 December to 10 January, prices rise, rooms sell out and many hotels add compulsory gala dinners for Christmas and New Year. Those dinners are billed by the hotel and sit outside the package price.
Our land-only starting prices for Kashmir in December per person, twin sharing, are Rs 10,500 for 4 nights and 5 days, Rs 12,500 for 5 nights and 6 days, and Rs 15,500 for 6 nights and 7 days. Dates from 21 December to 10 January cost more. Premium and heritage stays start from about Rs 22,000. Some operators list December plans well above these starting prices, so always compare hotel names, meals and the car before you decide.
For a short trip, see our 3 nights 4 days Kashmir tour package. For a slower pace, see our 4 nights 5 days Kashmir tour package. For a wider cost view, read Kashmir trip cost for 5 days. The festive dates have their own plan in our Christmas and New Year in Kashmir package.
When to book: Kashmir in December fills up fast near Christmas. Christmas week sells out first, and Chillai Kalan starts on 21 December, so we suggest locking hotels and flights by mid-November for festive dates. For early December, two to three weeks ahead is usually enough, but Gulmarg rooms go first.

A Simple Plan for Kashmir in December
This is a five-day plan for Kashmir in December that works whether or not the snow is heavy. The order can change with the weather. Use it as a base for Kashmir in December, and we will adjust it to your hotel and flight times.
Day 1: Srinagar. Arrive, rest and take a short shikara ride on Dal Lake. Daylight is short, so keep it light.
Day 2: Gulmarg. Drive up in the morning. Ride the Gondola if your ticket is booked, walk the meadow and try a sledge ride if there is snow. Night in a heated hotel.
Day 3: Gulmarg to Srinagar. Enjoy a slow morning, then drive back. Spend the afternoon in the old city, Jamia Masjid from outside and the bazaars.
Day 4: Pahalgam day trip, or a Srinagar day. If roads are clear, go to Pahalgam with a local taxi. If snow has blocked it, spend the day at a Mughal garden, Hazratbal and a long Wazwan dinner.
Day 5: Departure. Book an afternoon flight if you can.
If Gulmarg has no snow: Still go. The views of the white peaks from the Gondola are real, and the Gondola does not need snow on the meadow. Then add more time in Srinagar. We shift days around, and we tell you early rather than at the gate.
Skiers should take the longer six-night plan, because a free day in Gulmarg matters more when the weather is bad. For a resort night in Gulmarg, see our Khyber Gulmarg stay package. To learn why the resort matters, read why Gulmarg is Asia’s premier ski destination, or our Gulmarg destination guide. To book the hotel and car for this route, see our Gulmarg tour packages and the Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam package. If you need a different route or number of nights, our customized Kashmir holiday packages let you set it.
Things to Do in Kashmir in December
Kashmir in December is not only about snow. Here is what guests usually add to their days.
- Gulmarg Gondola and snow play: Ride up for the views, then sledge or walk on the meadow if the snow is deep enough.
- Skiing and snowboarding: Lessons for beginners run when the slopes open. Gear is hired on site.
- Shikara on Dal Lake: A winter ride is quiet and clear, with snow on the far mountains on good days. Dress warmly, because the wind off the water is sharp.
- Old city and bazaars: Walk around Jamia Masjid, the shawl and walnut-wood shops and the bakeries. Buy dry fruit and saffron here.
- Wazwan and kahwa: A long Kashmiri dinner is the best answer to a cold night. Hot kahwa is served everywhere. Our guide on what is Wazwan explains the courses.
- Hot hotel evenings: Many guests say the best part of Kashmir in December is a warm room, a bukhari fire and a slow dinner.
- A quieter day out: If the main spots are crowded, try the Doodhpathri day trip when roads allow, or read how to avoid tourist crowds in Kashmir.
If you want a houseboat night, ask about heating first, because houseboats are cold in this month. See our heritage houseboat stay on Dal Lake for what is included, or our luxury houseboat packages for a warmer, premium option.
Couples often pick Kashmir in December for the quiet and the snow. Our 5 nights 6 days Kashmir honeymoon package is built around slow evenings and heated rooms.
What to Pack for Kashmir in December
Pack for sub-zero nights. The right layers make Kashmir in December comfortable even at -5°C. Take thermals, a warm jacket, gloves, a woollen cap, wool socks, waterproof shoes with good grip and sunglasses for snow glare. Keep a warm layer in your hand luggage, not in the boot. Moisturiser and lip balm matter too, because the air is dry. Our Kashmir winter packing guide has the full list, and you can hire jackets and boots in Gulmarg.
Who Should Go and Who Should Skip
Be honest with yourself about what you expect. Kashmir in December suits you if:
- You want snow, and you accept that the exact date is not guaranteed.
- You like quiet places, food and slow evenings.
- You are travelling as a couple, a family or a group of friends.
- You can keep your dates flexible.
Skip Kashmir in December, or pick late December or January, if:
- You need snow on one exact date.
- You have a very tight flight connection and no buffer day.
- You cannot cope with cold nights, or you have a health condition that needs care at height. Talk to your doctor first.
- You want Gurez or Sonamarg Zero Point to be guaranteed.
We would rather tell you this now than meet you at the airport with a plan that cannot work. That is the honest picture of Kashmir in December. For Foreign Travellers Planning Kashmir in December
Kashmir in December suits many foreign visitors well. We host guests from the Gulf, the UK, the US, Australia and Malaysia, and many ask about a December snow break. Kashmir in December is popular with them, especially for a snow break on a longer India trip.
- Arrival: Fly into Srinagar airport. We meet you at arrivals.
- Visa: You need a valid Indian visa. Apply for an e-visa on the official Indian e-visa portal.
- Permits: No special permit is needed for Srinagar, Gulmarg or Pahalgam. Hotels ask for passport and visa copies, so carry several.
- Gondola: Foreign visitors need their travel agency to send full names and passport numbers to the cable car company at least two days before the ride. Send your passport details early, because the gate checks that your ID matches the ticket.
- Money: Foreign cards often fail in smaller shops. Carry cash in rupees.
- Insurance: Take travel insurance that covers winter sports and medical help.
- Food: Meat is almost always halal. Vegetarian food is easy. Alcohol is hard to find.
- Prayer: Winter dusk is early, around 5 pm. Plan prayer stops around your drives.
