• Reported fares are around Rs 740 to 810 for Phase 1 and Rs 900 to 1,010 for Phase 2, with about Rs 1,640 to 1,820 for both. Tatkal tickets for the next day open daily at 5 PM, and reported Tatkal fares are about Rs 1,100 for Phase 1 and Rs 1,300 for Phase 2. Fares and slots change, so confirm them on the portal before you plan.
• Phase 2 needs a valid Phase 1 booking.
• Gondola tickets and ski lift passes are separate products. A gondola ticket takes you up. A lift pass is what you buy to use the ski lifts repeatedly.
• The gondola can close for wind, heavy snow or maintenance. Some reports mention Monday maintenance closures and Phase 2 being unavailable on busy days, but treat both as unconfirmed and read the official Gondola notices on the day. Refunds for weather and maintenance closures have been announced, and the timeline depends on the authority.
• In 2026 the Gondola was shut after a technical fault on 25 May. More than 300 people were brought down safely, an inquiry committee was formed, and the Chief Minister reopened it on 25 June 2026. Check the current status before you pay for anything non-refundable.
• Queues at Gulmarg: Asia’s Premier Ski Destination are longest on weekends and during the Christmas and New Year rush. Early slots are quieter.

• You are not comfortable with cold. Night temperatures are well below freezing.

Getting to Gulmarg in Winter

Gulmarg: Asia’s Premier Ski Destination is about 50 km from Srinagar, and the drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, or 2 to 2.5 hours on snow days. The road runs through Tangmarg, and from there the last stretch can need 4×4 vehicles or snow chains after snow. • Start early. Winter days are short, dusk comes at about 5 pm, and black ice forms quickly on shaded bends.
• Avoid driving at night, especially on the Jammu to Srinagar highway.
• Srinagar airport is the closest if you arrive by air. Fog cancelled all Srinagar flights on 5 January 2025, so a flight is never a sure thing in winter.
• Heavy snowfall can close the road for hours. Keep two spare days in January and one in December if you have a flight to catch.

Where to Stay

You have two choices. Staying at Gulmarg: Asia’s Premier Ski Destination puts you near the lifts, so you can reach the gondola quickly in the morning. Staying in Srinagar is cheaper and more flexible, but you add a long drive each way. For ski days, most visitors prefer at least two nights in Gulmarg. This is what an overseas skier needs to know before heading to Gulmarg: Asia’s Premier Ski Destination. Carry your original passport and a printout of your Indian visa or e-Visa. You can apply for the Indian e-Visa online, and it is best to apply at least four days before you arrive. Srinagar airport has limited or no scheduled international service, so most overseas guests connect through Delhi.

The Gondola has its own rule for foreign visitors. Since December 2024 the travel agency must email full names and passport numbers to the cable car authority at least two days before the visit, and the gate checks that your ID matches the ticket. On snow, we are honest: early December can be thin, and the safest window for powder is mid-January to the end of February. Chillai Kalan runs from 21 December 2026 to about 30 January 2027, so expect hard cold in the middle of the season. On security, the US State Department advisory lists Jammu and Kashmir at Level 4, and the UK FCDO travel advice advises against all travel to Jammu and Kashmir in the versions we checked.
