Pahalgam in winter is quiet, cold and very different from the summer trip most guides describe. The town stays reachable by road all season, Betaab Valley is usually open even in deep snow, and the higher valleys can be shut for weeks. Since April 2025 there is also something to check before you book: access to some Pahalgam sights was restricted for security reasons and then reopened in phases. Our local team reports Baisaran and Chandanwari as open at present, but access has changed more than once, so confirm both before you book. This guide shows what is open month by month, so you do not pay for a place you cannot reach.
We are a local team in Srinagar, so we plan Pahalgam in winter around the real conditions on the road. If you want the wider picture first, start with our Pahalgam Kashmir travel guide. If you are ready to book, our Pahalgam tour packages page has plans and prices. For the whole season, see our Kashmir winter tour packages and our Kashmir in winter overview.

Is Pahalgam Open in Winter?
Yes, Pahalgam in winter is open. Unlike Sonamarg, which can be cut off after heavy snow, Pahalgam is a town people live in all year, and the road from Srinagar is kept open. For a comparison, see our guide to Sonamarg in winter. Hotels, shops and the taxi stand keep working, though fewer restaurants stay open than in summer. That is why Pahalgam in winter works as a base even when other places close.
What changes in Pahalgam in winter is how far you can go once you are there. Snow clearing on the Lidder valley road mostly stops at Betaab Valley. Beyond it, the road climbs steeply towards Chandanwari and Aru, and those stretches can stay snowed in during the coldest weeks. So the real question is not “is Pahalgam open” but “which parts of Pahalgam can I see on my dates”.
Pahalgam in Winter: Month-by-Month
Sources agree that snow is most reliable in January and February, and they differ on the edges, so treat this month-by-month table for Pahalgam in winter as a guide. Chillai Kalan, Kashmir’s coldest 40 days, runs from 21 December 2026 to about 30 January 2027, and our Chillai Kalan guide explains what those weeks mean for roads and flights.
| Month | Snow and weather | What you can usually see | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| October | Crisp days, cold nights, first snow on the high peaks | Town, Betaab and Aru; Chandanwari if confirmed open | Quiet and good value |
| November | Cold and mostly dry; snow mainly in the upper valleys | Town and Betaab; Aru on many days; Chandanwari if confirmed open | Scenery can look brown in the town |
| December | Light snow in town, heavier higher up; snow sticks from late December | Town and Betaab; higher valleys depend on snowfall | Christmas and New Year dates are busy and costly |
| January | Peak snow and cold | Town and Betaab; the Aru road can shut after heavy snow | Busiest winter month in 2026 visitor figures |
| February | Cold, with snow still on the ground | Same as January; roads slowly improve | Good snow with slightly fewer crowds |
| Early March | Snow melting in town, still deep higher up | Town and Betaab; Aru when the road is clear; Chandanwari if confirmed open | Quiet, mixed scenery |
Snow in Pahalgam in winter is never guaranteed on one date. Early January 2026 was dry for about three weeks, and guests who booked only for snow were disappointed. For a fuller plan for each month, read our guides to Kashmir in November, Kashmir in December, Kashmir in January 2027 and Kashmir in February. For a view of every winter month across the Valley, read our guide to the best time to visit Kashmir for snowfall. What Is Open and What Is Not
| Place | Winter status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pahalgam town and market | Open | Fewer restaurants, but hotels and shops work normally |
| Lidder River banks | Open | Edges can freeze; never walk on the ice |
| Betaab Valley | Usually open all year | About 7 to 8 km from town; entry about Rs 100 per adult; hours about 8 AM to sunset |
| Aru Valley | Open; can close after heavy snowfall | About 12 km from town; reopened in September 2025 after a security closure. See our Aru Valley guide |
| Chandanwari | Reported open at present; can be snowed in during the coldest weeks | About 16 km from town. Confirm before you book |
| Baisaran | Reported open at present | No motor road. Confirm before you book, because access has changed more than once |
| Pahalgam Golf Course | Usually under snow | Not for golf in winter; you can walk past it |
| Kolahoi and Tarsar-Marsar treks | Not winter treks | Snow closes the high routes |
When you plan Pahalgam in winter, remember that taxi drivers at the stand may tell you every road is open. Ask directly whether the road is open all the way, and refuse to pay for a place the driver will not reach. One traveller reported paying in full for Aru and Chandanwari and being turned back after a few kilometres.
Current Access and Security Updates
After the attack at Baisaran on 22 April 2025, authorities closed nearly 50 tourist spots across Jammu and Kashmir as a precaution. They reopened in phases: Betaab Valley and the town parks in June 2025, Aru Valley in September 2025, and 14 more places in February 2026. Reports from April and July 2026 still listed Baisaran as closed, and an April 2026 report also named Chandanwari as closed. Our local team in Srinagar now reports both as open, but because older reports disagree, we confirm the current status for every Pahalgam in winter booking before we quote it, and you should confirm it again before you travel.
Many older blogs and videos about Pahalgam in winter were written before April 2025 and show outdated access, rates and rules, so rely on current information. Check the J&K Tourism website for official updates before you fix your dates.
Tourist numbers have recovered, so Pahalgam in winter is busy in peak weeks. J&K Tourism figures reported in April 2026 counted nearly 10 lakh visitors to Pahalgam between April 2025 and April 2026, with about 80,000 in January 2026 alone. Carry a photo ID, expect checkpoints and follow police instructions.
How to Reach Pahalgam in Winter
By air: Fly into Srinagar airport. Pahalgam is about 90 to 96 km away by road. There is no airport in Pahalgam.
By road: The usual route runs from Srinagar down NH44 to Anantnag, then along the Lidder River through Aishmuqam to Pahalgam. The drive to Pahalgam in winter takes about 3 hours in dry weather. The stretch around NH44 and Anantnag gets real snowfall in January, so allow extra time and avoid night driving. If you have no winter driving experience, do not self-drive to Pahalgam in winter. Hire a local driver instead.
Local sightseeing needs a local taxi. A taxi from Srinagar can drop you in Pahalgam, but the local taxi union does not allow it to take you to Betaab Valley, Aru Valley or Chandanwari. Plan to switch to a Pahalgam taxi at the stand. Rates there are fixed, so ask for the rate card. An older guide put a Betaab round trip at around Rs 1,500, so confirm the current price.
Flights and fog: Fog can delay flights at Srinagar airport in deep winter, so never plan a tight same-day connection on your last day. A buffer day is part of every good Pahalgam in winter plan.
Pahalgam vs Gulmarg vs Sonamarg in Winter
Many guests ask whether Pahalgam in winter is a better pick than Gulmarg or Sonamarg. Each suits a different kind of trip, and most winter itineraries use more than one.
| Pahalgam | Gulmarg | Sonamarg | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Road access in winter | Open all season | Open; snow can slow the drive | Town reachable on most winter days; Zero Point and Thajiwas decided day by day |
| Best for | Quiet snow walks, Betaab, a slow stay | Gondola, skiing, deepest snow | Mountain scenery and a day trip when roads allow |
| Skiing | Basic and occasional | Yes, the main ski area | No |
| Main risk | Aru and Chandanwari road closures | Crowds in peak weeks; Igloo Cafe normally closed over Christmas and New Year | Road and avalanche closures |
For Gulmarg, see our guide to a winter ski trip to Gulmarg and our Igloo Cafe Gulmarg page. Pahalgam in winter is the calmer choice when you want snow without the crowds. Gulmarg to Pahalgam is a long winter day, often 4 to 5 hours depending on traffic, so do not try to do both in one day.
Winter Things to Do in Pahalgam
Pahalgam in winter is about slow days, not a long list of sights. These are the things worth doing:
- Betaab Valley in snow: The meadow and pines under snow are the main reason to visit Pahalgam in winter. It is a short, easy visit, so it suits families and older travellers.
- Snow walks and photography: Walk along the Lidder and through the quiet lanes. Early mornings after fresh snow give the best light.
- Sledging and snow play: Local operators arrange sledges and snow scooters when there is enough cover. Availability changes with the snow, so ask on the day.
- Basic skiing: Visitors report amateur skiing near Betaab on good snow days. It is an hour or two of fun, not a ski holiday. Gulmarg is where serious skiers go, and our Gulmarg ski destination guide covers it.
- Kashmiri food: Hot kahwa and a wazwan dinner suit a cold evening. See our Kashmir cuisine guide and our what is Wazwan post for what to order.
- Gulmarg and Srinagar add-ons: Most winter guests pair Pahalgam with the Gulmarg Gondola and a night on Dal Lake. Book through our Gulmarg Gondola ticket booking page, and read about frozen Dal Lake and our heritage houseboat stay before you decide.
If you want quieter ground beyond the town, our guide to Pahalgam’s offbeat valley trails is better for spring and autumn than for deep winter.
Where to Stay and What to Ask About Heating
Hotels for Pahalgam in winter are all in the town, because there are none at Betaab Valley. Book early for 21 December to 10 January and for weekends in January and February.
Ask every hotel these questions before you pay:
- Does the room have a heater or a bukhari, and is it fitted in the room you are booking?
- Is hot water available all day, or only at fixed times?
- Is the hotel on the main road or up a slope that ices over?
- What is the plan if snow blocks the road on arrival day?
A hotel that offers only hot-water bottles is not a good stay for Pahalgam in winter. Ventilate any room with a fire or heater. Prices for Pahalgam in winter rise sharply in peak weeks. One traveller report quotes Rs 7,500 to Rs 15,000 a night for basic rooms at the busiest time, which looks high, so always ask for the rate in writing. Our land-only plans start from Rs 10,500 per person for 4 nights and 5 days, twin sharing, and peak dates cost more.
Sample Plans: One Night or Two
Most guests combine Pahalgam in winter with Srinagar and Gulmarg.
One night, as part of a circuit. Our 4N/5D plan runs Srinagar for two nights, Gulmarg for one night and Pahalgam for one night. See the full plan on our 4 nights 5 days Kashmir tour package page or our Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam tour package. The Gulmarg to Pahalgam day is long in winter, so start early and do not add other stops. If you only have four days, our 3 nights 4 days Kashmir tour package is a shorter plan.
Two nights in Pahalgam in winter. Day 1: drive from Srinagar, check in, rest and walk by the Lidder. Day 2: Betaab Valley in the morning, a slow afternoon, and an early dinner. Day 3: return to Srinagar after breakfast with a buffer for snow. This suits couples and families who want Pahalgam in winter for the quiet more than the sightseeing. Our Kashmir family tour package with price page is a good base to extend.
If you want Gulmarg’s snow as well, see our Gulmarg tour packages and our Gulmarg destination guide.
Pahalgam in Winter for Foreign Travellers
Pahalgam in winter works well for visitors from the UK, US, Australia, the Gulf and Southeast Asia, but a few steps need planning ahead. Our foreign tourists in Kashmir page covers the full checklist.
- Arrival: Fly into Srinagar airport. We arrange the road transfer to Pahalgam.
- Visa: You need a valid Indian visa before you travel. Apply through the official Indian e-visa portal and carry printed copies.
- Permits: We know of no special permit for Pahalgam for foreign nationals. Carry your passport and visa copies, because hotels and checkpoints ask for them.
- Gulmarg add-on: If your trip includes the Gondola, the travel agency emails each foreign visitor’s full name and passport number to the J&K Cable Car Corporation at least two days before the ride, so send passport details when you book.
- Money: Cards often fail in smaller shops and for local taxis, and ATMs can run empty. Carry enough Indian rupees in cash.
- SIM cards: Rules for tourist SIMs change, so ask us or your hotel what is current before you arrive.
- Insurance: Buy travel insurance that covers delays and medical care in cold weather, and check your own government’s travel advisory before you book.
- Food: Vegetarian meals are easy to arrange for Pahalgam in winter. Tell your hotel when you book.
Costs, Payment and Cancellation
The cost of Pahalgam in winter depends mostly on your dates and your hotel. Our land-only starting prices, per person and twin sharing, are Rs 10,500 for 4N/5D, Rs 12,500 for 5N/6D and Rs 15,500 for 6N/7D. Dates from 21 December to 10 January cost more. Premium and heritage stays start from about Rs 22,000. Christmas and New Year gala dinners are usually billed by the hotel and sit outside the package price, so check our Christmas and New Year in Kashmir package before you book those dates.
Our terms: 25% advance, 50% by 20 to 29 days before departure, and the balance 20 days before. Cancellations 30 or more days out carry a small fee. Between 20 and 30 days, 50% applies; between 10 and 19 days, 75%; under 10 days, 100%. Refunds for weather or road closures depend on what the hotel or driver charges us. Ask any operator for these terms in writing.
Budget for these Pahalgam in winter extras: the local taxi to Betaab Valley, Betaab entry, lunches and any sledge or snow-scooter rides. For the whole winter picture, see our winter tour plans on the Kashmir winter tour packages hub, and for a wider budget view, our Kashmir trip cost for 5 days page. If you would rather travel in the quiet weeks before the snow, read our luxury Kashmir tour packages for premium stays that cover those dates.
Safety on Snowy Roads and Paths
These habits keep a Pahalgam in winter trip safe and simple.
- Black ice: Roads and paths freeze after sunset and early in the morning. Wear shoes with grip.
- River edges: Never step onto the frozen edges of the Lidder.
- Driving: Travel by day. Ask your driver about chains before snow days.
- Avalanche slopes: Stay off high slopes and do not trek in snow without a guide.
- Security: Carry photo ID and follow police and checkpoint instructions.
- Heaters: Ventilate any room with a fire or heater, and never sleep in a closed room with a coal fire.
- Buffer day: Leave a spare day if you have a fixed flight home.
What to Pack
For Pahalgam in winter, layers matter more than one heavy coat: thermals, a warm mid layer, a windproof jacket, insulated gloves, a cap and waterproof boots with grip. Snow boots can often be rented in town. Our Kashmir winter packing guide has the full checklist.
Who Pahalgam in Winter Is Not For
Pahalgam in winter is a good trip for the right guest and a poor one for the wrong guest.
- Guests who want guaranteed snow on one date. Snow is likely in January and February, but never certain on a given day.
- Skiers. Pahalgam has only basic snow play. Choose Gulmarg for serious skiing.
- Trekkers. The high routes, including Kolahoi and Tarsar-Marsar, are closed by snow in winter.
- Guests who need every viewpoint on a fixed date. Baisaran and Chandanwari are open at present but access can change, and heavy snow can shut the Aru and Chandanwari roads.
- Anyone with a tight schedule. Snow can delay roads and flights.
- Travellers with difficulty on icy paths. Betaab is easy, but the lanes can be slippery.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
These are the errors we see most often with Pahalgam in winter plans.
- Paying for a road that is closed. Ask the taxi stand whether the road is open all the way.
- Planning a day around Baisaran without checking. Access has changed more than once since April 2025, so confirm before you build any itinerary on it.
- Skipping the heater question. Confirm heating before you pay for the room.
- Booking for snow alone. Plan Betaab, food and a slow pace so the trip works even if the snow is light.
- Self-driving without winter experience. Use a local driver after snow.
- Using old blogs. Many were written before April 2025 and show outdated access, rates and rules.
- Tight timing on the last day. Fog and snow can delay flights.

Is Pahalgam open in winter?
Yes. Pahalgam in winter stays open: the town and the road from Srinagar run all season, and Betaab Valley is usually open too. Higher valleys such as Aru and Chandanwari can be snowed in from about January to early March, and some sights have been closed for security reasons since April 2025.
Does it snow in Pahalgam in December?
Usually a little. December often brings light snow in town and heavier snow higher up, with snow sticking from late December. January and February are more reliable.
Can I visit Aru Valley and Chandanwari in winter?
Often not in the coldest weeks, because snow clearing mostly stops at Betaab. Chandanwari was also closed for security reasons in the latest reports we found. Confirm both before you book.
Is Baisaran open?
No, not in the latest reports we found. Baisaran was reported closed to visitors in April and July 2026. Check the current status with us or on the J&K Tourism website before you plan around it.
