But Pahalgam Kashmir has something the others don’t: a proper town built around a river, pine forest that comes right down to the water, and enough spread-out sightseeing that you can fill two or three unhurried days without ever feeling like you’re rushing between photo stops.

Where Is Pahalgam Kashmir? Location, Altitude and Quick Facts
Pahalgam Kashmir sits in the Anantnag district of Kashmir, at the point where the Lidder River comes down out of the mountains and splits the town into two halves connected by a handful of bridges. Historically it was a summer grazing ground for shepherds (the name roughly translates to “village of shepherds”) before it became one of the three or four places every Kashmir itinerary tries to include.

How to Reach Pahalgam Kashmir
By air. Srinagar’s airport is the nearest to Pahalgam Kashmir, roughly 90 to 96 km away. That is a 2.5 to 3-hour drive that’s built into pretty much every itinerary, ours included. There’s no airport in Pahalgam Kashmir itself and none planned. Fog can delay flights at Srinagar in winter, so keep a buffer day on your return. By rail. This is where a lot of older travel guides are out of date: the Kashmir valley’s own rail line now runs through Srinagar and Anantnag, so if you’re already in the valley, Anantnag, about 45 km from Pahalgam, is your closest station, not Jammu. If you’re arriving from outside Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu Tawi remains the nearest station with major intercity connections, roughly 280 km and 7 to 8 hours away by road from there. The Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat, which began running in June 2025, takes about three hours and is a useful option if you are already at Katra. Most travellers still fly into Srinagar. Check current timetables before you book a train.
By road. NH44 runs directly from Srinagar to Pahalgam, and it’s a well-maintained route with regular taxis, shared cabs and buses in addition to private transfers. The usual route goes through Anantnag and along the Lidder River. Avoid driving at night, and allow extra time after snow.
One thing worth knowing before you get there: once you’re in Pahalgam Kashmir, private vehicles, including your Srinagar transfer car, aren’t permitted onto the Betaab Valley, Aru Valley or Chandanwari routes. These three are restricted to registered local union taxis, so plan on switching vehicles at the designated point in town rather than expecting your same driver to take you the whole way. Ask the taxi stand for its rate card before you agree to anything.
Current Access: What Is Open in Pahalgam Kashmir Right Now
After the attack at Baisaran on 22 April 2025, authorities closed nearly 50 tourist spots across Jammu and Kashmir as a precaution. They reopened in phases: Pahalgam town, Betaab Valley and several parks in June 2025, more places in September 2025, and 14 more in February 2026. Reports in April 2026 still listed Baisaran and Chandanwari as closed. As of October 2026, both are reported open.
Access has changed more than once, so confirm the current status of Baisaran and Chandanwari before you pay for a plan that includes them. We check it for every booking before we quote it. Many older blogs and videos were written before April 2025 and show outdated access, rates and rules. Official updates are on the J&K Tourism website.
Expect security checkpoints in Pahalgam Kashmir and carry a government photo ID at all times. Follow police instructions at each stop. If your plan changes on the day, the driver and the hotel are the quickest sources of local information.
Things to See in Pahalgam Kashmir
These are the places worth your time in Pahalgam Kashmir, in the order most visitors do them.
Betaab Valley. The easiest and most-visited stop in Pahalgam Kashmir, a wide green bowl along the Lidder River named after the 1983 Bollywood film shot here. It’s a flat, short walk from the parking area, which makes it comfortable for families and older travellers who don’t want a hike attached to every stop. Entry currently runs Rs 100 per adult and Rs 50 for children aged 6 to 12, with children under 6 admitted free. Carry small cash, as most gates don’t take cards.
Aru Valley. About 12 km from Pahalgam, quieter and greener than Betaab, and the trailhead for longer treks toward Kolahoi Glacier and the Tarsar-Marsar alpine lakes. Worth the drive even if you’re not trekking further. It’s a genuinely different pace from the main Pahalgam Kashmir circuit. Entry is generally free or a small nominal charge, unlike Betaab, though this can vary. Our Aru Valley guide has the details.
Chandanwari. Roughly 16 km out, and the traditional starting point of the Amarnath Yatra, the annual pilgrimage managed by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board. It sits high enough that snow patches can linger into early summer, which is why short snow-sledging stops here stay popular well outside the actual winter. Entry is typically around Rs 50 per person. It is reported open, but confirm before you book, and expect it to be snowed in after heavy winter snow.
Baisaran Valley (“Mini Switzerland”). Often missed by first-time visitors, Baisaran is arguably the most photographed meadow in Pahalgam. Located about 5 km above the town at 2,400 meters, it is reached via a one-hour forest pony trail or on foot (there is no road). Reported open as of October 2026, visitors should confirm current status and pony rules beforehand. Operators typically charge an all-inclusive return price of Rs 1,300 to 1,800 per person covering all viewpoints, which should be agreed upon before starting the ride.
The town and the river. Between the big stops, the town itself is worth a slow evening. Walk along the Lidder, cross a few of the bridges, look at the shawl and dry fruit shops in the main market and stop at the old Shiva temple near the centre. A walk like this costs nothing and is the best use of the hours when the sun is low.
Beyond the main four, golf is available at the Pahalgam Club, one of the highest-altitude courses in the country, and the Lidder River is a known trout-fishing spot with a permit. How Many Days Do You Need in Pahalgam Kashmir?
Two full days in Pahalgam Kashmir covers Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari without rushing. Add a half-day if Baisaran is on your list, since the pony ride and time at the top easily takes three to four hours round trip. If Pahalgam Kashmir is one stop on a bigger Kashmir circuit, most travellers pair it with Srinagar and Gulmarg.

A Simple 3-Day Plan for Pahalgam Kashmir
This plan suits a relaxed Pahalgam Kashmir trip from Srinagar and leaves room for weather.
- Day 1: Arrive and settle in. Drive from Srinagar in the morning, check in and rest. In the afternoon, walk along the Lidder and through the main market. Keep the evening free and eat early, because the town quietens down after dark.
- Day 2: Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari. Start early with the local taxi. Betaab Valley is the gentle first stop, then continue to Aru Valley and, if it is open that day, Chandanwari. Ask the driver for a clear timing for each stop and agree on the plan before you leave.
- Day 3: Baisaran or a slow morning. If Baisaran is open and you want it, start the pony trail early, because the ride and the time at the top take most of a morning. If not, spend the morning by the river, then drive back to Srinagar after lunch with a buffer for traffic.
If you can only give Pahalgam Kashmir one night, do Betaab Valley and the river walk on the same day you arrive, and use the next morning for Aru Valley before driving on to Srinagar or Gulmarg.
Where to Stay in Pahalgam Kashmir
Hotels in Pahalgam Kashmir are spread along the Lidder and the main road, and the ones closer to the river are quieter. Book early for May, June and the festive weeks in winter. A few questions are worth asking before you pay:
- Is the hotel on the main road or up a slope that ices over in winter?
- Does the room have a heater or a bukhari in winter, and is hot water available all day?
- How far is the hotel from the taxi stand and the market?
- What is the rule if heavy snow or a closure blocks the road on arrival day?

Pahalgam Kashmir for Foreign Tourists
Pahalgam Kashmir is a popular stop for visitors from abroad, and a few steps need planning ahead. Our foreign tourists in Kashmir page has the full checklist.
- Documents. Carry your original passport and a valid Indian visa, plus copies. Hotels and checkpoints ask for them.
- Permits. We know of no special permit for Pahalgam Kashmir for foreign nationals. Border areas and some other regions are different, so we check before any plan goes out.
- Winter angle. If your winter trip adds the Gulmarg Gondola, the travel agency emails each foreign visitor’s full name and passport number to the J&K Cable Car Corporation at least two days before the ride, so send passport details when you book. See our Gulmarg Gondola ticket booking page.
- Money and phones. Cards often fail in small shops and at pony stands, so carry Indian rupees in cash, and ask us what is current before you buy a SIM card.
- Insurance. Buy travel insurance that covers delays, medical care and winter sports, and read your own government’s travel advice.
Costs, Payment and Cancellation
The cost of a Pahalgam Kashmir trip depends mostly on your dates, your hotel and how many nights you add. Our land-only starting prices, per person and twin sharing, are Rs 10,500 for 4 nights and 5 days, Rs 12,500 for 5 nights and 6 days and Rs 15,500 for 6 nights and 7 days. Budget separately for the local taxi to Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari, entry fees, pony rides and lunches. Our terms are a 25% advance, 50% by 20 to 29 days before departure, and the balance 20 days before. A small fee applies to cancellations 30 or more days out. Between 20 and 30 days, 50% applies; between 10 and 19 days, 75%; under 10 days, 100%. Refunds for weather or road closures depend on what the hotel or driver charges us. Ask any operator for its terms in writing before you pay.
Pahalgam Kashmir for Trekkers
Pahalgam Kashmir’s real trekking credentials start at Aru Valley, which is the trailhead toward Kolahoi Glacier and the Tarsar-Marsar lakes. Both are proper multi-day routes that need permits, a guide and some acclimatisation. Both are reachable as extensions of a South Kashmir trip rather than a separate journey, and both are closed by snow in winter, so check conditions and restrictions before you book. Combining Pahalgam Kashmir With Other Places
Pahalgam Kashmir works best as one stop in a wider circuit, and the order matters. Most visitors do Srinagar first, then Gulmarg, then Pahalgam, or the other way around. - Carry ID. A government photo ID is needed at checkpoints and hotels. Foreign nationals should carry a passport and visa.

- Check the phone. Prepaid SIMs bought outside Jammu and Kashmir usually do not work in the Valley. Postpaid connections do.

Who Pahalgam Kashmir Is Not For
We would rather be honest than sell a trip that does not fit.
- Guests who want a high-adrenaline holiday. Pahalgam is a slow, scenic stop. Choose Gulmarg for skiing and the Gondola.
- Guests who need guaranteed snow on one date. Winter snow is likely in January and February, but never certain on a given day.
- Anyone with a very tight schedule. Pahalgam Kashmir needs at least two days to feel worthwhile.
- Guests who cannot manage a pony ride or a short walk. Betaab is easy, but Baisaran needs a pony or a trek.

- Expecting your Srinagar car to take you everywhere. Local union taxis handle Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari.
- Not confirming Baisaran and Chandanwari. Both are reported open, but access has changed before. Confirm before you pay.
- Paying for a pony without agreeing the price. Agree on the full return price first.
- Using old blogs. Many were written before April 2025 and show outdated rules and rates.
- Giving Pahalgam Kashmir only half a day. The town is a place to slow down, not a quick photo stop.
