Pahalgam sits in the Anantnag district of Kashmir, at the point where the Lidder River comes down out of the mountains and splits the town into two halves connected by a handful of bridges. Historically it was a summer grazing ground for shepherds — the name roughly translates to “village of shepherds” — before it became one of the three or four places every Kashmir itinerary tries to include.

How to Reach Pahalgam Kashmir
By air. Srinagar’s airport is the nearest, roughly 90–96 km away — a 2.5 to 3-hour drive that’s built into pretty much every Pahalgam Kashmir itinerary, ours included. There’s no airport in Pahalgam itself and none planned.
By rail. This is where a lot of older travel guides are out of date: the Kashmir valley’s own rail line now runs through Srinagar and Anantnag, so if you’re already in the valley, Anantnag — about 45 km from Pahalgam — is your closest station, not Jammu. If you’re arriving from outside Jammu & Kashmir, Jammu Tawi remains the nearest station with major intercity connections, roughly 280 km and 7 to 8 hours away by road from there, so most travelers fly into Srinagar instead.
By road. NH44 runs directly from Srinagar to Pahalgam, and it’s a well-maintained route with regular taxis, shared cabs, and buses in addition to private transfers.
Things to See in Pahalgam Kashmir
Betaab Valley. The easiest and most-visited stop, a wide green bowl along the Lidder River named after the 1983 Bollywood film shot here. It’s a flat, short walk from the parking area, which makes it comfortable for families and older travelers who don’t want a hike attached to every stop.
Aru Valley. About 12 km from Pahalgam, quieter and greener than Betaab, and the trailhead for longer treks toward Kolahoi Glacier and the Tarsar-Marsar alpine lakes. Worth the drive even if you’re not trekking further — it’s a genuinely different pace from the main Pahalgam circuit.
Chandanwari. Roughly 16 km out, and the traditional starting point of the Amarnath Yatra. It sits high enough that snow patches can linger into early summer, which is why short snow-sledging stops here stay popular well outside the actual winter.
Baisaran Valley (“Mini Switzerland”). This is the stop most first-time visitors don’t know to ask about, which is a shame, because it’s arguably the single most photographed meadow in Pahalgam. Baisaran sits about 5 km above the town at roughly 2,400 metres, reached either by a forest pony trail (about an hour each way) or on foot if you’d rather trek it — there’s no road up. Most pony operators quote one all-in price covering the viewpoints along the way rather than charging per stop; expect somewhere in the ₹1,300–1,800 per person range for a return trip, and agree on the full price before anyone gets on a horse, not after you’re halfway up the trail.
Beyond the main four, golf is available at the Pahalgam Club — one of the highest-altitude courses in the country — and the Lidder River is a known trout-fishing spot with a permit. April to June: The most reliable window — comfortable daytime temperatures, meadows in full bloom, and every sightseeing point open and accessible.
July to August: Monsoon touches Pahalgam less than the rest of the valley, and roads generally stay open through this stretch, though it’s worth packing for rain.
September to November: Cooler air, clearer skies, and noticeably thinner crowds than peak summer — a strong pick if you’re visiting Pahalgam Kashmir specifically to avoid queues at Betaab and Chandanwari.
December to February: A different, quieter kind of trip. Snow transforms the town, but roads to Aru and Chandanwari can close after heavy snowfall, so plan with some flexibility.
