Sonmarg Kashmir 2026: Ultimate Guide to Best Winter Access

Often grouped with Gulmarg and Pahalgam, Sonmarg is frequently dropped from shorter Kashmir itineraries. That is a missed opportunity. It is both a scenic alpine meadow town and the gateway to the Srinagar-Leh highway. Where Is Sonmarg and How High Is It?

Sonmarg sits in Ganderbal district, roughly 80 to 90 km northeast of Srinagar (some sources give up to 100 km, depending on the route), at an elevation of about 2,730 to 2,800 metres (8,957 to 9,186 feet). The name means “Meadow of Gold”: sona is gold and marg is meadow. It lies on the Srinagar-Leh highway (NH1) and is the last proper town before the road climbs over Zoji La Pass into Ladakh.

Winter is where this page differs from older guides. The old November-to-March closure of the Srinagar to Sonmarg road no longer applies. Zoji La Pass beyond town is a separate matter, and we cover it in the winter section below.

Getting There by Air, Road and Train

By air: Srinagar’s Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport is the nearest airport, about 80 to 90 km away depending on your route. A private or shared taxi covers the drive in roughly 2.5 to 3 hours.

By road from Srinagar: This is how almost everyone gets there. It is a straightforward drive along NH1, the same highway that continues to Kargil and Leh. Shared taxis run from Srinagar’s Tourist Reception Centre for budget travellers in the open season. Private cabs give you more flexibility to stop at Kangan or Gund. The route now passes through the 6.5 km Z-Morh Tunnel near Gagangir, which bypasses the old avalanche-prone stretch and has made this leg safer and more reliable in winter. By train: There is no direct rail link. The nearest station is Jammu Tawi, over 300 km away, so this is impractical for most itineraries. You would still face a long road journey afterwards.

One practical note before you arrive: prepaid SIM cards bought outside Jammu and Kashmir generally do not work in the Valley. A postpaid connection, or a local SIM bought with ID, is the safer choice.

Best Time to Visit Sonmarg

A few things are worth knowing about each window.

July to August: This overlaps with the Amarnath Yatra, because Baltal, about 15 km from Sonmarg, is one of the two base camps. The 2026 Yatra ran from July 3 to August 28, and dates change every year, so check the shrine board’s announcement before you plan. Sonmarg gets genuinely crowded, so if you want a quieter visit, plan around it.

September to October: A good, less crowded alternative to spring, with clearer air. The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek season runs from July to September, so late September is the end of it.

Sonmarg in Winter: What Is Open and What Is Not

Until 2025, the road to Sonmarg stayed closed for about three to four months every winter because of snow and avalanches near Gagangir. The Z-Morh Tunnel changed that when it opened on January 13, 2025. Tourist police post data reported more than 55,000 visitors in January 2025 alone. Information written before 2025 is now largely out of date.

Even so, “open” does not mean “fully serviced”. This is what to expect from December to February:

Snow depth varies a lot. About 1.5 feet was reported in early February 2025, while hoteliers have reported 6 to 7 feet in heavy winters. Nights are well below freezing, and one source puts the winter range between about -10 C and 5 C.

Even with the Border Roads Organisation working to keep Zoji La open through much of the 2025-26 winter, the pass remains unpredictable. On the night of January 27, 2026, an avalanche in the Sarbal area caused no deaths but shut the Srinagar-Leh highway for a day and led to flight cancellations at Srinagar. On March 27, 2026, an avalanche between Zero Point and Minimarg buried vehicles heading from Srinagar to Kargil; seven people died and five were injured, according to PTI.

Is it worth going in winter? Yes, for a quiet snow day, photography and the Sindh River under snow. No, if you want skiing. Things to Do Around the Meadow

Thajiwas Glacier. The most visited spot here, about 3 km from the main taxi stand and reachable by a short trek or pony ride. It is an easy, scenic outing rather than a serious trek, which is exactly why it draws crowds. There is no entry fee or permit for the trail itself. Walking takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, and a pony round trip typically costs Rs 700 to 1,500 per person. Agree the price before you set off, because quotes at the trailhead often start high.

Wooden sledge rides on the snow are also offered, commonly at Rs 400 to 800 depending on distance. Private cars from Srinagar cannot enter the Thajiwas zone, so you take a local union taxi from Sonmarg town.

Zoji La Pass and Zero Point. The highway climbs dramatically past Sonmarg to this high pass, the actual gateway into Ladakh. Zero Point is a popular snow-viewing stop and a common half-day trip. Access depends on road, weather and security conditions, so check before you commit. It is done in a local union taxi, not your own vehicle or Srinagar transfer car, and the round trip usually costs Rs 4,000 to 7,000 per vehicle, not per person.

Baltal. About 15 km away, this valley is the base camp for the shorter Amarnath Yatra route and is worth the drive for the mountain views, Yatra season or not.

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. This is where Sonmarg earns its reputation among serious trekkers. The multi-day route passes Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Nundkol and Gangabal lakes below Mount Haramukh. Operators describe it as a 7 to 8 day trek of about 70 km, reaching roughly 4,200 m at its highest pass. The trek starts at Shitkadi, a little beyond Sonmarg, and ends at Naranag. Naranag. An old village with 8th-century temple ruins, less visited than the glacier or the lakes. It is worth a stop if you have an extra day and want something quieter.

Nilagrad River. A short roadside break on the drive, better as a stop than a destination in itself.

Rafting, fishing and photography. Rafting is offered on the Sindh River in season. Krishansar and Vishansar are known for trout fishing, which usually needs a permit from the fisheries department, so ask your operator.

Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonmarg: Which Fits Your Trip?

Sonmarg rewards a short, well-timed visit more than a long stay. Prices vary by season and by how busy the day is. Treat every figure as a guide, not a price list. In winter, when fewer visitors come, some travellers report higher quotes, so settle each price before you start. One Honest Warning: Pony Handlers at Thajiwas

This is the kind of detail that gets left out of glossy guides. Pony handlers around the Thajiwas trail have a reputation, echoed by many independent travellers, for aggressive upselling and pressure tactics. Some imply the walk is not possible without a pony, when it generally is. Agree a price clearly before you set off if you do want to ride, and do not feel pressured if you would rather walk.

Safety Tips for the Glacier and the Road

Stay off glacier surfaces. In May and June 2024, sections of ice near Thajiwas Glacier collapsed on two occasions, with deaths reported. Stay on the marked path and away from edges and snow cavities.

Respect the weather call. If the union taxi drivers or local officials say Zero Point is closed, accept it. Avalanche risk on the Zoji La road is real.

Watch for altitude. Sonmarg is at about 2,700 m and the trails climb higher, so even fit travellers can feel it. Drink water, go slowly and descend if you get a headache or feel unwell.

Dress for the wind. It is far colder at the glacier than in town, even on a sunny day.

Do not drive at night. Winter roads can ice over after dark.

Carry ID. Keep two paper copies and a digital copy. Foreign nationals should carry passport and visa.

What to Carry for a Day in the Snow

• Waterproof boots with grip, since trails turn icy by afternoon, and warm layers you can add or remove.
• Gloves, a hat and sunglasses. Snow glare is strong even on cloudy days.
• A power bank. Cold drains phone batteries quickly, and a dead phone is a problem on a day with no shared taxis.
• Water and snacks. Food stalls near the glacier are basic and may be closed in deep winter.
• Printed and digital copies of your ID, and some cash for pony, sledge and taxi payments.

Who Should Skip This Trip in Winter

Skip a winter visit if you want skiing or a busy snow resort, if you need a hotel with guaranteed heating and hot water, or if you cannot spare an extra day for weather. It is also a poor choice if you plan to drive on to Leh at short notice. Zoji La can close with little warning. Common Mistakes

• Using pre-2025 guides that say the road is closed all winter.
• Assuming Zero Point is open because Sonmarg town is.
• Trying to drive your own car to Thajiwas.
• Paying a pony quote without agreeing the price first.
• Booking a Ladakh onward leg for the same morning, with no spare day.
• Arriving in July or August without checking Yatra dates.

Why Plan This Trip With a Local Operator

Road status, Zero Point access and Baltal conditions all shift with the season and with Amarnath Yatra security arrangements, in ways that are hard to track from outside the Valley. A trip planned on last year’s information can run into a closed road or restricted access that a same-week local check would have caught.
