Sonamarg in winter is a very different story from what older guides tell you. Since the Z-Morh Tunnel opened on January 13, 2025, the town has stayed reachable by road on most days of the cold season. The 2025-26 winter brought deep snow, a crowded New Year, an avalanche scare in town and a deadly avalanche on the Zoji La road further up. This guide gives you an honest answer for each month, so you can decide whether to go, when to go and what to skip.

This guide to Sonamarg in winter is written for the 2026-27 season, including Chillai Kalan (Dec 21, 2026 to Jan 31, 2027), the coldest 40 days of the year. For the town itself in every season, our Sonmarg travel guide covers sights, treks and costs. For how it compares with the rest of the Valley, see our month-by-month guide to winter in Kashmir. For a wider view of road risks, checkpoints and what to carry, read our guide on staying safe in Kashmir in winter.

Is Sonamarg in Winter Open? The Short Answer

Sonamarg in winter is open as far as the town goes, with limits. The Srinagar to Sonamarg road is open on most winter days, but snow, avalanche warnings and road clearing can stop traffic for hours or sometimes days. What changes from week to week is not the town but the places beyond it: Thajiwas Glacier, Zero Point and the Zoji La road.

QuestionShort answer
Is the town open?Yes, by road on most days through the Z-Morh Tunnel
Is it a full winter resort? No. Stays and services are limited, unlike Gulmarg
Zero Point and Zoji LaDepend on weather and avalanche risk; the local union decides each day
Thajiwas GlacierSources disagree in deep winter; confirm on the day
Own carFine to Sonamarg town; a local union taxi is needed for Thajiwas and Zero Point
SkiingNot reliable; ice skating and snow events are occasional
Best fitA day trip or one night, with a spare day in the plan
Poor fitSkiers, guests who need guaranteed heating, anyone with a tight Leh connection

Why is Sonamarg in winter so confusing? Because three things changed at once: the tunnel, the push to promote Sonamarg as a winter place, and Zoji La staying open longer than ever. Many pre-2025 pages still rank well and say the road is shut from November to March. That is out of date for the town, although it is still true that the pass beyond can close at short notice.

Sonamarg in Winter Month by Month

This table uses what happened in 2025-26 as a guide to Sonamarg in winter. Snow is never the same twice, so treat it as a pattern and not a promise.

MonthWhat to expectOur view
NovemberFirst snow often arrives; road open; some hotels scale down for the seasonEasy road, little snow, quiet
DecemberOpen; moderate to heavy snow from Dec 24 in 2025; New Year festival and near-full hotels on Dec 31, 2025Good for a first snow day; book early for New Year
JanuaryDeepest snow (about 4 feet by late January 2026); avalanche warning and an avalanche in the Sarbal area on Jan 27, 2026Beautiful, but the highest risk of delays
FebruaryOpen in 2025 with about 57,000 visitors that month; snow still deep; Zoji La kept open in 2026, according to BROGood snow; keep a spare day
MarchTown starts to thaw; heavy snow still possible on the pass; Zoji La avalanche on Mar 27, 2026Easier in town, careful on the pass

November and early December

This is the gentle end of the season. The road is open, snow is light and it often melts within days, and you can reach the town without much planning. Some hotels begin closing for winter, so confirm that your property is operating before you pay. If you want a first look at Sonamarg in winter without the January crowds, this is a sensible window. Pair it with a day in Srinagar and our Dal Lake houseboat stay.

Late December and New Year

Sonamarg in winter has become a New Year destination. On Dec 31, 2025, Greater Kashmir reported a festival, fresh snow, a heavy tourist rush on the road and hotels that were almost full. Expect slow traffic, packed taxi stands and higher quotes. Book a room and a private car well ahead, leave Srinagar early and plan to be back on the main road before dark. If you are building a festive trip, our Christmas and New Year in Kashmir package shows how we pair Sonamarg with Gulmarg and Srinagar.

January

January brings the deepest snow and the sharpest risk. About 4 feet had settled in Sonamarg by late January 2026, according to Greater Kashmir. A high-danger avalanche warning had been issued, and on the night of Jan 27 an avalanche hit the Sarbal area. Officials reported no deaths. Police then asked visitors and drivers to avoid stopping in avalanche-prone areas. During the same spell the Srinagar-Leh highway was shut because of heavy snow ahead of Sonamarg, and flights at Srinagar were cancelled. A January trip to Sonamarg in winter suits travellers with flexible dates. It does not suit a fixed, back-to-back schedule. Our Chillai Kalan guide explains what the coldest weeks feel like across the Valley.

February and March

February 2025 drew about 57,000 visitors, according to Tourist Police Post figures reported by Kashmir Life, so Sonamarg in winter is clearly a working stop and not a ghost town. Snow is still deep, the days are a little longer and the light is better for photographs. By March the town starts to thaw, but the pass above it does not. The worst Zoji La accident of the 2025-26 season happened on Mar 27, 2026, which we cover below.

What Is Open and What Is Not in Winter

Sonamarg in winter is open, but that does not mean fully serviced. This is what to expect from December to February.

ItemWinter status
Srinagar to Sonamarg roadOpen on most days; delays after heavy snow
Z-Morh TunnelAbout 6.5 km long; bypasses the old avalanche-prone Gagangir stretch
Hotels and campsLimited; some scale down, so confirm before you book
Heating, hot water, powerAsk in advance; supply can suffer after deep snow
Shared taxis and busesUnreliable in winter; plan a private car
Thajiwas GlacierSources disagree; some list sledging, others say the trail can be blocked
Zero Point (Zoji La)Decided day by day by weather, avalanche risk and the local union
Zoji La beyond Zero PointKept open most of winter 2025-26, but closures and avalanches still happen
Ice rink and snow eventsOccasional, announced by the Sonamarg Development Authority
Mobile signalWeak on the glacier trail and near Zero Point (one source)

How to Reach Sonamarg When It Snows

Almost everyone visiting Sonamarg in winter goes by road from Srinagar on NH1 through Kangan and Gund. The distance is about 80 to 90 km, and the drive takes 2.5 to 3 hours in normal conditions. Allow more after snow. The Z-Morh Tunnel now takes you past the old avalanche-prone stretch near Gagangir, which is why the road is no longer cut off for months.

By private car or cab. This is the only dependable way to do Sonamarg in winter. A Srinagar taxi can bring you to the main hotel area of Sonamarg. Local sightseeing to Thajiwas and Zero Point needs a Sonamarg union taxi, which two separate sources confirm. Do not leave Srinagar late. In December and January, daylight ends around 5 pm, and icy roads after dark are a bad idea.

By air. Srinagar airport is the nearest. In deep winter, fog and snow cause delays and cancellations, so avoid tight same-day connections.

By train. There is no direct rail link. The nearest station is Jammu Tawi, over 300 km away.

Warning about “open” claims. Some drivers sell a Sonamarg trip and drop guests at a point short of the town. Ask where exactly you will be taken, and agree the plan in writing or on a message before the day. If you book with us, our Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam tour package can include Sonamarg as a day trip when conditions allow.

Zoji La, Zero Point and the Road to Ladakh in Winter

Zoji La is the pass beyond Sonamarg that leads to Kargil and Leh, and it matters for Sonamarg in winter because it decides whether a trip can continue to Ladakh. For years the Srinagar-Leh highway closed for around six months. The Border Roads Organisation says it kept the pass open through the whole 2025-26 winter, a first, and announced this in March 2026. That is real progress, but it does not make the pass safe on any given day.

Here is what actually happened in 2025-26:

  • On Jan 27-28, 2026, heavy snow ahead of Sonamarg shut the Srinagar-Leh highway.
  • On Mar 27, 2026, avalanches hit the stretch between Zero Point and Minimarg on the Ladakh side. PTI reported seven deaths and five injuries, and The Federal’s PTI report notes that vehicles were buried. Early reports gave six deaths. The highway was still shut the next day.

The practical rules are simple. Never treat Zero Point as a sure thing because the town is open. If you are heading to Kargil or Leh, check the road with Ladakh Tourism and local police notices the night before, and keep a spare day. Do not plan around the separate Zojila tunnel, which is still being built. For route and permit details, read our Srinagar to Leh road trip and permit guide. Winter is a hard season for the full trip, so most travellers do Sonamarg in winter and Ladakh in summer using our Leh Ladakh tour packages or the combined Kashmir and Leh Ladakh tour package.

Avalanche Awareness and Safety

Safety for Sonamarg in winter starts with avalanche awareness. The town and the high ground around it are avalanche-prone, and officials issue warnings after heavy snow. The Jan 27, 2026 slide entered some houses, hotels and parked vehicles in the Sarbal area, which shows that risk is not limited to the glacier.

  • Respect warnings. If police, the union or your hotel say a stretch is unsafe, do not argue and do not go.
  • Do not halt in avalanche zones. Police have asked drivers and visitors to avoid stopping or parking in flagged areas, especially during and after snowfall.
  • Ask your hotel about its location. Ask whether the property sits in an area that was flagged in recent warnings.
  • Stay off glacier edges and snow cavities. Ice near Thajiwas has collapsed in past seasons.
  • Watch for altitude. The town is at about 2,730 m. Drink water, go slowly and come down if you feel unwell.
  • Do not drive at night. Roads ice over after dark.
  • Carry ID. Keep two paper copies and a digital copy. Foreign nationals should carry passport and visa.
  • Plan for a SIM that works. Prepaid SIMs bought outside J&K usually do not work in the Valley. A postpaid line or a local SIM is safer.

Things to Do in Sonamarg in Winter

Snow walks in the meadow. The simplest plan for Sonamarg in winter is also the best. The meadow, the pine slopes and the Sindh River under snow are the main attraction in the cold months. Go in the morning when the light is clean.

Thajiwas Glacier, if it is open. The glacier is about 3 km from the main taxi stand. Operators list sledging and snow walks in winter, while others say the trail can be blocked after heavy snow. Decide on the day. Sledge rides usually cost Rs 400 to 800 depending on distance. Private cars from Srinagar cannot enter the Thajiwas zone, so you need a local union taxi.

Zero Point, only when cleared. The snow walls and high-pass views are worth it when the road is open. It is a local union taxi trip, not a trip for your own car, and the union can turn it down for safety.

Ice skating and snow events. The Sonamarg Development Authority built an ice rink and has run ice-skating events in mid-January and a New Year festival. Officials have also talked about snow biking and skiing. Treat these as occasional events, not a daily programme, and ask your hotel what is on during your dates.

Photography. Fresh snow on the meadows, frozen streams and the sunrise light on the peaks are the reasons many guests choose Sonamarg in winter. Bring a spare phone battery, because cold drains it fast.

Warm food. Order kehwa and a hot meal where you stay. For dishes worth trying across the Valley, see our Kashmiri cuisine guide.

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek starts near Sonamarg, but it is a July to September route and not a winter trek. Our guide to alpine lake trekking routes in Kashmir helps you plan it for summer.

Where to Stay: Hotel Questions to Ask

Choosing a hotel for Sonamarg in winter needs more care than in summer. Many hotels scale down, and we have not found a reliable public list of which ones stay open. Before you pay, ask these questions:

  • Is the property open and staffed for your exact dates?
  • Is there a room heater or central heating, and is hot water available all day?
  • Is there a power backup for snow days?
  • How far is it from the main road, and who clears the access in snow?
  • Is the property in an area flagged in recent avalanche warnings?
  • Do you provide meals, and are there set menus on New Year dates?

Hot-water bottles alone are a red flag in January. If heating is vague, choose a different property or keep it as a day trip. You can also use Srinagar as your base and add Sonamarg as a day trip, which is the safest plan in deep winter.

Sonamarg, Gulmarg or Pahalgam: Which Winter Place Fits?

The table shows where Sonamarg in winter sits against the other two main snow stops.

PlaceBest forWinter strengthTime needed
SonamargQuiet snow, Ladakh gateway views, photographyQuiet snow town; limited stays and activitiesDay trip or 1 night
GulmargSkiing, the Gondola, snow activitiesStrongest winter resort1 to 2 nights
PahalgamRiver valleys and calm snow walksGood snow cover, quieter than Gulmarg1 to 2 nights

If you can only pick one snow destination, Gulmarg is the stronger choice, and Sonamarg in winter is the quieter add-on. Read our Gulmarg guide and our winter ski trip plan, or look at the Gulmarg tour packages. For gentler snow and river scenery, see Pahalgam in winter. If you already have Gulmarg and Pahalgam in the plan, Sonamarg in winter adds a different landscape: a wide alpine meadow, a glacier trail and the feel of standing at the edge of Ladakh. For the full picture, our Kashmir winter tour packages page shows how we combine them. Sonamarg can see its first snow late in the month, and our Kashmir in November guide shows how that fits a wider trip.

Costs: What to Budget for a Winter Day

ItemIndicative price
Srinagar to Sonamarg private cab, same-day sightseeingAbout Rs 2,800 to 4,000 (one 2026 guide; confirm)
Union taxi to Zero PointAbout Rs 4,000 to 7,000 per vehicle; only when the road is cleared
Sledge rideRs 400 to 800, depending on distance
Pony round trip to ThajiwasRs 700 to 1,500 per person
Snow boot rentalAbout Rs 250 to 350 a day (one source)
Hotel roomNo reliable published winter tariff; compare three quotes

Treat every figure for Sonamarg in winter as a guide. In winter, when fewer visitors come, some travellers report higher quotes, so agree each price before you start. Ask whether a rate card exists for ponies and sledges.

For a full Kashmir circuit that includes Sonamarg in winter, our land-only prices start from Rs 10,500 per person for 4 nights and 5 days, Rs 12,500 for 5 nights and 6 days and Rs 15,500 for 6 nights and 7 days, on a twin-sharing basis. Dates between Dec 21 and Jan 10 cost more. See the 4 nights 5 days Kashmir tour package and the 5 nights 6 days Kashmir family package. If you want an exact budget, our Kashmir trip cost for 5 days guide breaks it down.

Sample Plans for a Snow Trip

PlanHow it works
Winter day trip from SrinagarLeave by 8 am, reach Sonamarg by about 11, take a union taxi to the snow if cleared, and start back by 2:30 pm so you are on the main road before dusk
One night in SonamargArrive by early afternoon, enjoy the snow at sunset, stay in a property with confirmed heating, and start the next day with a clear weather check
Five-day winter circuitSrinagar 1 night, Gulmarg 2 nights, Pahalgam 1 night, with Sonamarg as a weather-dependent day trip
Ladakh gateway stopOnly in a clear window; never book an onward leg for the same morning

A good plan for Sonamarg in winter always has a backup day. On a five-day plan, do not put Sonamarg and Gulmarg on the same day. They are in opposite directions from Srinagar. A good order is Gulmarg first when the ski season is on, then Pahalgam, and Sonamarg on the day that the forecast looks best. For a flexible plan, our customised Kashmir holiday packages let you move the Sonamarg day.

What to Pack for a Snow Day

  • Waterproof boots with grip; trails turn icy by afternoon.
  • Warm layers you can add or remove, plus gloves, a hat and sunglasses for snow glare.
  • A power bank, because cold drains phone batteries quickly.
  • Water and snacks. Food stalls near the glacier are basic and may be closed in deep winter.
  • Printed and digital copies of your ID, and cash for pony, sledge and taxi payments.

Our Kashmir winter packing guide has the full list for Sonamarg in winter. If you are continuing to Ladakh later in the year, use the high-altitude Ladakh packing list as well.

Who Should Skip Sonamarg in Winter

Skip it if you want skiing or a busy snow resort, if you need a hotel with guaranteed heating and hot water, or if you cannot spare a day for weather. Sonamarg in winter is also a poor choice if you plan to drive on to Leh at short notice, because Zoji La can close with little warning. If you are after green meadows or the Great Lakes Trek, come between April and September instead. Guests who want a first snow experience with easier logistics usually do better in Gulmarg or Pahalgam, and our Kashmir snowfall guide helps you pick the month.

Common Mistakes

These are the errors we see most often when guests plan Sonamarg in winter.

  • Using pre-2025 guides that say the road is closed all winter.
  • Assuming Zero Point or Thajiwas is open because the town is open.
  • Trying to drive your own car to Thajiwas or Zero Point.
  • Booking a Ladakh leg for the same morning, with no spare day.
  • Leaving Srinagar late and driving back in the dark.
  • Paying a pony or taxi quote without agreeing the price first.
  • Arriving on Dec 31 without a confirmed room and car.
  • Skipping a call to the hotel about heating and power.

Plan Your Winter Trip With a Local Team

Planning Sonamarg in winter is harder than in summer. Road status, Zero Point access and hotel operating dates change quickly, and they are hard to track from outside the Valley. We are a local team in Srinagar with 24/7 support, and we plan Sonamarg as a day trip, an overnight stay or part of a longer Kashmir holiday. Read what makes a good local tour operator in Srinagar, or send your dates through our Kashmir tour package booking page and we will tell you honestly whether Sonamarg fits.

Payment terms for packages are 25% advance, 50% by 20 to 29 days before departure, and the balance 20 days before. Cancellation costs depend on timing: 30 or more days before departure carries a small fee, 20 to 30 days is 50%, 10 to 19 days is 75% and under 10 days is 100%. Weather or road-closure refunds depend on what the hotel or driver charges.

For official updates, check the J&K Tourism website before you travel, or read reviews on our Google Business profile. Is Sonamarg open in January?

The town is reachable by road on most days, but heavy snow and avalanche warnings can close the road for hours or days. Check the day before and keep a spare day.

What is the best month for Sonamarg in winter?

Late December to February has the deepest snow and the highest risk of delays. November and March are easier for roads and weather, so they suit a first snow day.

Can I take my own car?

Yes, to the town. For Thajiwas and Zero Point you need a local union taxi.

Can I ski in Sonamarg?

Not reliably. There are occasional winter events, but Gulmarg is the better choice for skiing.

Can I drive from Sonamarg to Leh in winter?

Only if Zoji La is open and the forecast is clear. Do not plan it on short notice
