Say “Gulmarg” to most people who have researched a Kashmir trip and they picture the Gondola. Fair enough, because it is one of the highest cable cars in the world and worth the hype. But treating Gulmarg Kashmir as only “the Gondola town” means missing most of what makes it worth a night or two, not just a half-day stop. This guide covers the whole picture: what is here beyond the cable car, when to come, how to get there and how to plan around the weather.

We are a local Srinagar operator, so we have kept the facts about Gulmarg Kashmir practical and told you where sources disagree. If you are ready to book rather than research, see our Gulmarg tour packages page for itineraries and starting prices.

Where Is Gulmarg Kashmir? Location, Altitude and Quick Facts

Gulmarg Kashmir sits in the Baramulla district, in the Pir Panjal range, about 45 to 50 km from Srinagar (sources differ). The name means “meadow of flowers.” Local shepherds once called the meadow Gaurimarg, after the goddess Parvati. In the 16th century Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak renamed it Gulmarg. He visited with his wife Habba Khatoon, and the meadows later became a favourite retreat of the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who is said to have collected 21 kinds of wildflowers here for his gardens. During British rule Gulmarg played the same role as Shimla and Darjeeling, a hill-station escape from the summer heat.

How to Reach Gulmarg Kashmir

There is no railway station or airport in Gulmarg. Srinagar is the gateway for both, and from there it is a private taxi or transfer.

  • By air: Fly into Srinagar. Gulmarg Kashmir is roughly 45 to 50 km from the airport. If you are flying in from abroad, our guide for foreign tourists in Kashmir explains visas, registration and airport connections.
  • By road: The route runs through Tangmarg, where the climb starts in earnest. The road is in good shape in dry weather, and the drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • In winter: Allow 2 to 2.5 hours. On snow days the stretch from Tangmarg to Gulmarg needs a 4×4 or snow chains, and Srinagar-registered cars may be stopped at Tangmarg, so you may need to switch vehicles.
  • Timing: Avoid night driving in winter. Fog can delay flights into Srinagar in the coldest weeks, so keep a buffer day before an onward connection.

The Gulmarg Gondola in Brief

The Gondola is the main draw of Gulmarg Kashmir, and it runs in two parts. Phase 1 goes from the base to Kongdori, a ride of about 10 to 15 minutes. Phase 2 goes on to the upper station near Apharwat, where meadow gives way to open, high-altitude terrain. On a clear day you get wide views across the Pir Panjal and, in good visibility, towards Nanga Parbat. It takes you to a height that a trekker would need most of a day to reach.

Phase 2 needs a valid Phase 1 booking, and weather often closes it. Queues in peak season can run for hours without a booked slot. Our Gulmarg Gondola ticket booking guide covers the official portal, fares, Tatkal tickets and what to do if the ride is closed.

Things to Do in Gulmarg Kashmir

The Gondola is one part of a Gulmarg Kashmir day. These are the other things worth your time, grouped by season.

Any season

  • Gulmarg Golf Course. At about 2,650 m, it is one of the highest golf courses in the world and a different way to spend a few hours if you are not skiing or hiking.
  • Maharani Temple. A red-roofed Shiva temple on a knoll above the town, built in the early 20th century and named after a queen of the Dogra royal family. It is a short walk from the centre with good views.
  • St. Mary’s Church. A small Victorian-style church built in 1902 near the golf course. It is quiet, scenic and easy to fit into a walk.
  • Baba Reshi Shrine. A revered Sufi shrine of the 15th-century saint Baba Payamuddin Reshi, set among forest on the road up from Tangmarg. It suits a peaceful half-day stop.

Summer: May to August

  • Alpather Lake. A high-altitude lake at the foot of Apharwat, frozen well into June in most years. Most guides give about 13 km on foot from Gulmarg, which takes a day. A shorter walk from the Phase 2 area is possible in good weather, but check the trail and the weather first.
  • Khilanmarg. A sub-alpine meadow above the main bowl, reached by a climb of about 6 km (distance as per local routes, so confirm with your guide). It gives wide views of Nanga Parbat and the Pir Panjal range, and is best in May to July when the slopes fill with wildflowers.
  • Strawberry Valley. Not a true valley but a pleasant stretch of meadow with a small strawberry plantation, popular for a picnic and an easy walk.
  • Ningli Nallah. A mountain stream fed by melt from the Apharwat area, used for short walks and camping.

Winter: December to March

  • Skiing and snowboarding. The Apharwat slopes have made Gulmarg Kashmir a ski destination for all of Asia. Hire a certified instructor on day one, whatever your experience elsewhere, because the terrain and altitude are their own learning curve. Our guide to planning a winter ski trip to Gulmarg covers lessons, gear, passes and costs, and our page on why Gulmarg is Asia’s premier ski destination explains the lifts and terrain.
  • The Igloo Cafe. A cafe built from packed snow, open only in winter, usually from about January 10 to mid-March. Our Igloo Cafe Gulmarg guide covers prices, timings and what to expect.
  • Snow play and the Gondola. Phase 1 alone gives snow views and a short walk, even if you never click into a ski.

Best Time to Visit Gulmarg Kashmir

The right month for Gulmarg Kashmir depends on what you came for. Snow and meadows are two different trips.

MonthsWhat Gulmarg Kashmir is likeBest for
Mid-December to FebruarySnow, skiing and the coldest nights; the busiest and priciest weeks fall between December 21 and January 10Snow, skiing, the Igloo Cafe (from about January 10)
March to early AprilSofter snow, longer days, thinner cover late in the monthBeginners, budget plans
April to MayMelt, mud and the first green; changeable weatherQuiet visits
May to AugustGreen meadows, wildflowers and comfortable days; cold after sunsetWalks, golf, families
September to NovemberAutumn colour, fewer crowds and unpredictable weatherPhotographers, quiet stays

Winter overlaps with Chillai Kalan, Kashmir’s coldest 40 days, which run from December 21, 2026 to January 31, 2027. Our Chillai Kalan guide explains the dates, night temperatures and road conditions. First snow in Gulmarg usually comes between about December 10 and mid-December, but it is not guaranteed on a given date. For a month-by-month view across the whole Valley, read our guide to the best time to visit Kashmir for snowfall and our look at Kashmir in winter.

In summer, the Gondola at Gulmarg Kashmir gives a green view that looks nothing like the winter one. Shoulder months bring thinner crowds but less predictable conditions, so check the forecast before locking in dates if snow or bloom is your main reason to go.

Where to Stay in Gulmarg

Accommodation in Gulmarg Kashmir runs from simple guesthouses to full resort properties. Heating quality matters more here than almost anywhere else in Kashmir, because nights stay cold even outside peak winter. Ask what heating a room has, whether heater use is billed extra, and how far the property is from the Gondola base. A hotel in Gulmarg Kashmir lets you ski or ride the Gondola while day-trippers are still on the road from Tangmarg.

If you want comfort built around the slopes, our Khyber Gulmarg stay package is set close to the Gondola base station. Gulmarg has a limited number of properties, so book ahead for peak ski weekends and the festive weeks.

A Simple Plan for Gulmarg

How long should you stay in Gulmarg Kashmir? A day trip works, but one or two nights is better.

  • A day trip from Srinagar. Leave early. Ride Phase 1 of the Gondola, walk to the Maharani Temple and St. Mary’s Church, have lunch, and leave before dark. In winter this is rushed, because the drive takes 2 to 2.5 hours each way.
  • Two nights, any season. Day one: arrive, check in, walk the meadows and the golf course. Day two: Gondola in the morning, then a slow afternoon. In winter, add a lesson or the Igloo Cafe. In summer, add Khilanmarg or Strawberry Valley. Day three: leave after breakfast.
  • Four to five nights in winter. Add a second ski day and keep your Phase 2 days for the first clear weather window.

Winter or Summer in Gulmarg?

Gulmarg Kashmir is two different places depending on the season. In winter it is a ski resort, with white slopes, Gondola queues, hot kahwa and sub-zero nights. In summer it is a green hill meadow, with wildflowers, golf, pony rides and cool, clear days. Both are worth a visit, but they suit different people.

If you want snow, plan for mid-December to March. If you want to walk and relax, May to August is easier on the body and the budget. Winter costs more, and the festive weeks cost the most. For festive dates, see our Christmas and New Year in Kashmir page. Summer has its own crowd peak from May to July, so book the Gondola early in both seasons. Our guide on how to avoid tourist crowds in Kashmir has timing ideas for both.

How Many Nights Do You Need?

Most visitors give Gulmarg Kashmir one or two nights. One night is enough for the Gondola and a walk. Two nights let you ride Phase 1 on a clear morning and still keep a spare window if cloud closes Phase 2. Skiers need three to five nights, because lessons, gear and weather days eat time.

If you are on a tight Kashmir circuit, put Gulmarg Kashmir early in the trip, not last, so a weather delay does not put your flight home at risk.

Families, Couples and Groups

Gulmarg Kashmir suits different groups in different ways.

  • Families. Plan one outdoor activity a day, such as Phase 1, snow play in winter or a meadow walk and pony ride in summer. Children tire fast in the cold, and a warm room matters more than a packed schedule.
  • Couples. Choose a quiet stay close to the Gondola, take the early slot, and keep the evening for a warm dinner.
  • Groups of friends. Tell us your numbers early, because rooms and 4×4 vehicles are easier to arrange in advance.
  • Older travellers. Stick to Phase 1, keep days light and avoid steep walks and icy paths.

Getting Around Once You Arrive

The centre of Gulmarg Kashmir is compact. Hotels, the Gondola base, the golf course, the Maharani Temple and St. Mary’s Church sit within walking or short pony distance of each other. In winter, snow and ice make short walks slower, so wear boots with good grip. Our Kashmir winter packing guide lists what to bring. Light snow can arrive in the second half of the month, and our Kashmir in November guide explains what to expect.

For Tangmarg, Baba Reshi Shrine, Ningli Nallah or any day trip, keep your driver and car, and agree the plan the evening before. Pony rides and sledges are common. Agree the price and the route before you start.

Staying Safe

  • Altitude. The town is near 2,650 m and the top Gondola station is near 3,980 m. Walk slowly, drink water and come down if you feel unwell.
  • Cold. Nights are below freezing in winter and cold after sunset even in summer. Cover your hands, ears and face.
  • Avalanche risk. Stay on marked runs. Go off-piste only with a certified local guide.
  • Sun and glare. Snow glare is strong. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Heaters. Ventilate any room with a bukhari or heater, and never sleep with a charcoal fire in a closed room.
  • Roads. Avoid night driving in winter. Black ice forms fast after dark.

Costs and Booking

Think in separate lines for a Gulmarg Kashmir trip: your stay, transfers, Gondola tickets and food. Reported Gondola fares are about Rs 800 to Rs 810 for Phase 1 and Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,010 for Phase 2 per person, but the price on the official portal at checkout is the final one.

For land-only Kashmir packages, our 4N/5D plan starts from about Rs 10,500 per person, 5N/6D from Rs 12,500 and 6N/7D from Rs 15,500, twin sharing. Premium and heritage stays begin around Rs 22,000. Dates from December 21 to January 10 cost more. See our Gulmarg tour packages for current options, our Kashmir trip cost for 5 days page for a wider budget view and our luxury Kashmir tour packages for premium stays.

Our usual terms are a 25% advance, 50% by 20 to 29 days before departure, and the balance 20 days before. Cancellations 30 or more days out carry a small fee. Between 20 and 30 days, 50% applies; between 10 and 19 days, 75%; and under 10 days, 100%. Refunds for weather or road closures depend on what the hotel or driver charges us.

Practical Tips Before You Go

  • Carry cash. ATMs inside Gulmarg are limited. The nearest reliable one is in Tangmarg, about 13 km away.
  • Get a postpaid SIM, or rely on your hotel’s WiFi. Prepaid SIMs bought outside Jammu and Kashmir usually do not work in the Valley.
  • Pack warm layers for Gulmarg Kashmir even in summer. Temperatures drop sharply after sunset at this altitude.
  • Book Gondola slots ahead in peak season, because walk-up queues can run for hours.
  • Take the first day slowly. Mild altitude effects are possible. Drink water and avoid heavy exertion on arrival.
  • Beware of touts near the Gondola base who quote inflated “official” prices. Buy only from the official portal or counter.
  • Check official advisories on the J&K Tourism website for permit rules, road closures and seasonal notices before you travel to Gulmarg Kashmir.

Who Gulmarg Is Not For

Gulmarg Kashmir is a great trip for many people, but not for everyone. Being honest saves you money and a poor trip.

  • Guests who want a guaranteed Phase 2 day or guaranteed snow on one date. Weather decides.
  • Anyone with only a few hours. The drive eats most of a day trip to Gulmarg Kashmir, especially in winter.
  • Travellers who want a long list of sights. Gulmarg is about space, views and snow, not museums and markets.
  • People who dislike cold or high altitude, or who have heart, lung or blood pressure concerns. Speak to a doctor before riding Phase 2.
  • Those wanting a wide choice of restaurants or nightlife. Options are limited.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating Gulmarg Kashmir as a Gondola-only stop and leaving no time for the rest.
  • Planning a same-day ski right after landing in Srinagar.
  • Booking Gondola tickets late in peak weeks.
  • Forgetting cash and mobile network limits.
  • Assuming the Igloo Cafe is open at Christmas and New Year without checking.
  • Packing for summer weather in the shoulder months.
  • Squeezing Gulmarg and Pahalgam into one day in winter.

Combine Gulmarg With the Rest of Your Trip

Gulmarg is the classic first or last stop on a Srinagar-based Kashmir circuit. Our Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam tour package covers the standard combination, and our Pahalgam travel guide and Pahalgam in winter guide explain the next stop. If you are choosing between hill stations, compare it with Sonamarg, which has a glacier-and-pass character instead of Gulmarg’s ski-and-meadow identity, and read our Sonamarg in winter guide for the cold-season picture. Many travellers include both. In Srinagar, a heritage houseboat stay on Dal Lake pairs well with a Gulmarg ski trip, and in a cold January our guide to a frozen Dal Lake explains what you may see.
