I’ll be honest: most articles on how to avoid tourist crowds in Kashmir main hubs read as if they were written by someone who has never stood in the Gulmarg Gondola queue at 11 AM in June. We have. It is not fun. It is also completely avoidable, and that is really what this comes down to: knowing which two or three things actually move the needle, instead of a generic list of “go early, go off-season” advice that tells you nothing you could not have guessed.

We run trips through Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg pretty much every week at Travel Nerve Kashmir, so this is less a research exercise and more what we have picked up from doing it over and over. If you want the full picture of the valley before you plan, start with our complete Kashmir travel guide.

How to Avoid Tourist Crowds in Kashmir Main Hubs: Book the Gondola Before You Land

Start here, because it matters more than anything else on this list. Walk-up queues for the Gulmarg Gondola in peak windows, December to January and May to June, regularly run for hours. The Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) releases online Tatkal tickets every day at 5 PM for the next day, and they go within minutes. If you are not booking online in advance, that queue is where your morning goes.

Tickets are slot-based, and in peak season the regular slots can sell out days or even weeks ahead. Entry at the main gate is also regulated, and your photo ID must match the name on your ticket. That is not a queue you beat by showing up “a bit early.” Our Gulmarg Gondola ticket booking page explains how the slots and Tatkal system work, and the official JKCCC website is where the tickets are sold.

One thing almost nobody mentions: Phase 2, the ride up to Apharwat Peak, can close without warning when wind picks up or fog rolls in, sometimes for days at a time. The Gondola also pauses for scheduled maintenance on some Mondays. If your entire Gulmarg plan hinges on one specific day at Apharwat, you are gambling. We tell every guest to build in a buffer day if Phase 2 matters to them. Gondola tickets are booked and paid separately from your package, and we help with tickets, but we cannot promise a slot on a given day.

How to Avoid Tourist Crowds in Kashmir Main Hubs: The Gulmarg Entrance Lies to You

Here is something worth knowing before you go: the first thing you see at Gulmarg is a loud, crowded parking area full of pony operators shouting for attention, food stalls and souvenir sellers. It feels nothing like the quiet alpine meadow you came for, and a lot of people form their opinion of the whole place in those first five minutes.

Do not. Walk past it. The meadow opens up almost immediately and the noise stays behind at the gate. Knowing this in advance changes how you experience the first ten minutes of your trip. For a full picture of the resort, read our Gulmarg destination guide and the story of Gulmarg as Asia’s premier ski destination.

How to Avoid Tourist Crowds in Kashmir Main Hubs: Srinagar’s Dal Lake

Dal Lake between 10 AM and 4 PM, especially at weekends, is basically a traffic jam of shikaras. A sunrise ride gets you the lake at its stillest, with light that is better for photos anyway. In summer that means 6 to 7 AM. In winter the sun rises later, so aim for first light.

The same logic applies to the Mughal gardens. Get to Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh before noon and you will have them mostly to yourself, or at least you will not be fighting a tour group for a place to sit. If you are staying over the water rather than only visiting for the morning, read about a heritage houseboat stay on Dal Lake or our luxury houseboat packages before you book, because timing your check-in around the quiet windows makes a real difference.

How to Avoid Tourist Crowds in Kashmir Main Hubs: Pahalgam and Sonamarg

Betaab Valley and Baisaran get hit by every tour bus from mid-morning onwards. Betaab, Aru Valley and Chandanwari are reachable only by union taxi from the Pahalgam taxi stand, and private cabs, including the one that brought you from Srinagar, are not allowed on those roads. It is a system, not a hassle, but it means you are on the union’s schedule, so getting to the stand early matters more than it would elsewhere. Access to Baisaran has changed more than once in recent seasons, so we confirm it before it goes into your plan.

If you would rather skip the main three entirely, our guide to Pahalgam’s offbeat trails and hidden viewpoints covers where locals actually go. The Pahalgam travel guide and the page on Aru Valley help you choose.

One more Pahalgam factor: the Amarnath Yatra. In recent years it has run from early July to the Raksha Bandhan date in August (the 2026 pilgrimage ran from July 3 to August 28). During those weeks the Lidder valley runs close to capacity with pilgrim traffic, security checks and full hotels. If your trip is leisure rather than pilgrimage, that window is worth avoiding on crowd grounds alone, separate from the weather. Check the official Yatra dates each year.

Sonamarg works a little differently, because it is usually a long day trip from Srinagar rather than an overnight stop. Leaving early is not optional there. It is the only way to enjoy Thajiwas Glacier before the pony operators and the rest of the day-trip crowd arrive. Our Sonamarg guide explains the options, and staying a night there beats a rushed day trip.

How to Avoid Tourist Crowds in Kashmir Main Hubs: Pick Your Season Deliberately

May and June are Kashmir’s busiest and most expensive months, the classic family-holiday window, and everything shows it. Shift your dates and the whole trip changes:

  • September and October: this is genuinely the sweet spot. Crowds thin out noticeably, the light turns golden, and the Gulmarg queues basically stop being a problem. See autumn in Kashmir for what to expect.
  • March and April: the Tulip Garden in Srinagar draws weekend crowds, so go on a weekday morning.
  • July and August: monsoon season lower down, but also peak trekking season for routes like Tarsar-Marsar. Rates and crowds drop, apart from the Yatra-driven surge in Pahalgam noted above.
  • December to March: do not mistake this for off-season in Gulmarg. It is ski season, which makes it peak season there, even if Srinagar and Pahalgam are quiet.

How to Avoid Tourist Crowds in Kashmir Main Hubs in Winter

Winter crowds are concentrated in one place: Gulmarg. Snow-hungry visitors fill its hotels and Gondola slots, especially at weekends and from Christmas to New Year. Here is how to beat that.

  • Go midweek. Tuesday to Thursday is noticeably calmer than a weekend, and the slopes are better too.
  • Avoid the festive fortnight if you can. Rates also rise from December 21 to January 10, so mid-January or February weekdays give better value. Our Christmas and New Year in Kashmir page explains what that week looks like.
  • Stay two nights in Gulmarg. A day trip from Srinagar means the slowest roads and the longest queues. Our Gulmarg tour packages and Khyber Gulmarg stay package put you close to the slopes.
  • Use the quiet corners. Srinagar’s frozen-lake mornings and Pahalgam’s snow are calm. See frozen Dal Lake, Pahalgam in winter and Sonamarg in winter.
  • Plan for slower roads. It takes 2 to 2.5 hours from Srinagar to Gulmarg in winter, and it gets dark around 5 PM.

For dates, see Kashmir in winter, the best time for snowfall and our Chillai Kalan guide. The Kashmir winter tour packages page and our ski trip guide cover the rest, and the Igloo Cafe Gulmarg guide explains why that spot fills fast once it opens, usually from mid-January to mid-March.

How to Avoid Tourist Crowds in Kashmir Main Hubs as a Foreign Visitor

Overseas visitors can dodge crowds more easily than most, but a few rules work differently for foreign passports.

  • Gondola tickets. JKCCC introduced a feasibility-based booking system for foreign tourists in December 2024, in which travel agencies send the visitors’ names and passport numbers by email at least two days before the visit. We handle this step for our guests, and rules change, so we confirm it again before you travel.
  • Carry your passport. The name on your ticket must match your ID at the main gate.
  • Avoid Indian holiday rushes. School holidays in May and June, long weekends and the New Year week fill the hubs. Visiting in September, October or mid-winter weekdays gives you more space.
  • Visa and Form C. Apply through the official Indian e-Visa portal, and make sure your hotel or houseboat submits Form C through the FRRO website.
  • Cash. Carry rupees, because Gulmarg and Pahalgam have few ATMs and cards fail in small shops.
  • More help. Our page for foreign tourists in Kashmir covers money, SIM cards, food and arrival.

How to Avoid Tourist Crowds in Kashmir Main Hubs: A Few More Things That Just Work

  • Weekdays over weekends, every time. This alone solves half the crowd problem at any single hub.
  • Book online wherever possible, not only for the Gondola. It removes you from the queue entirely rather than making the queue faster.
  • Carry cash in Gulmarg. ATMs are scarce, and the nearest reliable one is in Tangmarg, about 13 km away. That is its own kind of delay nobody plans for.
  • Eat early. Restaurants near Dal Lake, Gulmarg and Pahalgam fill at lunch, so go at 12 noon or after 2 PM.
  • Check official advice. For timings, advisories and permit updates before you travel, the J&K Tourism website is worth a look.

How to Avoid Tourist Crowds in Kashmir Main Hubs: A Crowd-Smart 5-Day Plan

This plan uses the tips above. Adjust it to your season.

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar and take a late-afternoon shikara ride, when day trippers are gone.
  2. Day 2: Visit Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh before noon, then rest and explore the old city on foot.
  3. Day 3: Drive to Gulmarg early with Gondola slots already booked. Keep Phase 2 for the morning slot.
  4. Day 4: Gulmarg meadow walk, then drive to Pahalgam by midday. Add a buffer if the Gondola was closed.
  5. Day 5: Take a union taxi early to Aru or Betaab, then return to Srinagar.

Our Srinagar Gulmarg Pahalgam tour package follows a similar rhythm with hotels and cars arranged.

How to Avoid Tourist Crowds in Kashmir Main Hubs: Or Just Skip the Hubs Sometimes

Honestly, the most reliable way to avoid a crowd is to not be where the crowd is. Doodhpathri, Bangus Valley and the alpine lake treks beyond the standard circuit give you the same scenery with a fraction of the people. See our guides to a Doodhpathri day trip from Srinagar, Bangus Valley’s camping and trekking routes and unexplored alpine lakes trekking routes in Kashmir if that sounds more like your trip. How to Avoid Tourist Crowds in Kashmir Main Hubs: FAQs

What time should I book the Gulmarg Gondola to skip the queue?

Book online through the JKCC’s tatkal window, which opens at 5 PM the day before, or well in advance during peak season. Walk-up queues in December-January and May-June commonly run 2-3 hours.

Is Dal Lake crowded in the morning?

No — it’s calmest between 6 and 8 AM, well before the midday shikara traffic builds up.

What’s the best month to visit Kashmir to avoid crowds?

September and October, hands down. Clear weather, thinning crowds, and none of the peak-season queue problems that show up in summer.

Does Phase 2 of the Gondola close often?

More often than people expect. Wind, fog, or snowstorms can shut it down for several days at a stretch, so it’s worth keeping a backup day if reaching Apharwat Peak matters to your trip.
