Kashmir in January is the coldest month of the year and the best month for deep snow. Gulmarg is at its whitest, skiing is at its best and the Igloo Cafe opens. It is also the month with the most delays, and that is the main thing to plan for. Flights get cancelled, roads close and some places cannot be reached at all.

We are a local team in Srinagar, so we know both sides of Kashmir in January. This guide gives you the real weather, the snow chances, what is open, what goes wrong and who should skip. It also has a plan for Kashmir in January 2027 with a buffer built in.

Kashmir in January Weather

Kashmir in January is cold even at midday. Plan for the place where you will sleep, not the place where you land.

Srinagar: In January 2026, the city recorded -5.1°C on 8 January and about -6°C the next day. Days are often between 4°C and 8°C on clear afternoons, and colder under cloud.

Gulmarg: Nights run from about -4°C to -10°C. At about 2,650 m, it stays cold all day, and the wind makes it feel harsher.

Pahalgam: Nights are usually around -3°C to -6°C. Snow here is lighter and less reliable than in Gulmarg.

Fog and wind: Dense morning fog is common. Strong winds can shut the Gondola and bring down power lines.

These are normal ranges for Kashmir in January, not a forecast for your dates. A warm spell with rain can follow a hard freeze within days. Check the forecast a few days before you fly.

Does It Snow in Kashmir in January?

Yes. January is the month most likely to give you real, settled snow, especially in Gulmarg. But snow in Kashmir in January never arrives on a fixed date, and some years are slow.

In January 2026, the season was late. The Valley’s first heavy snowfall of the winter came around 22 to 25 January, and Gulmarg recorded about 45 cm in a day, as ETV Bharat reported. Tourists rushed in for sledge rides after weeks of lighter cover. In other years, the big snow comes in the first week of January instead.

Here is how snow usually works in Kashmir in January:

  • Gulmarg: Settled snow on the ground is likely through January. It is the safest place for snow.
  • Pahalgam and Sonamarg: Good chances, but access depends on the day.
  • Srinagar: The least predictable. A few centimetres can fall, and it may not stay white all month.

For a month-by-month view of snow chances, see our best time to visit Kashmir for snowfall guide. Nobody can promise snow on one exact date, and an operator who does is guessing.

Kashmir in January Week by Week

Kashmir in January is not one block. The weeks feel different, and the right week depends on what you want.

1 to 10 January: This is the tail of the peak season. Hotels are busiest and prices are at their highest. The Igloo Cafe is usually still closed. If a snow spell arrives, it is a beautiful week, but you must book early.

11 to 20 January: Crowds ease, the Igloo Cafe opens and ski lessons are in full swing. Weekdays in Gulmarg feel calmer. This is a good window for first-time snow visitors.

21 to about 30 January: This is the last stretch of Chillai Kalan. Snow on the ground is usually at its most settled in Gulmarg by now, but fog and road closures can still hit. Keep your buffer. Chillai Khurd, the next 20-day phase, begins about 31 January.

Chillai Kalan and Kashmir in January

Chillai Kalan, the 40-day coldest phase, runs from 21 December 2026 to about 30 January 2027, so almost all of Kashmir in January 2027 sits inside it. That means the best snow chances and the worst delay risk at the same time. Our Chillai Kalan guide explains how those weeks work for roads, water pipes and flights.

Frozen Dal Lake and Safety

On the coldest nights of Kashmir in January, the edges of Dal Lake and other water bodies can freeze. In January 2026, news reports described parts of Dal Lake freezing during the cold wave. It is a beautiful sight, but it is not a place to walk. Do not step onto frozen water. The ice is uneven, and local boatmen do not treat it as safe.

Shikara rides usually still run when the water and weather allow. Our frozen Dal Lake guide explains when the lake freezes, where to see it and the safety rules.

What Is Open and What Is Closed in January

Most main places stay open in Kashmir in January. Some do not. Here is the honest list for Kashmir in January.

PlaceStatus in January
Gulmarg GondolaUsually open, but wind or heavy snow can pause it for hours or days
Gulmarg skiingBest from mid-January to February, depending on snow
Igloo Cafe GulmargSeason starts about 10 January and runs to mid-March
Dal Lake shikara ridesRunning when conditions allow. Ice can stop them
Mughal gardensOpen, with bare chinars and often no fountains
Pahalgam townUsually reachable. Local taxis only
Baisaran, Chandanwari, AruConfirm before you book. Snow often closes them
Sonamarg townReachable on most days
Sonamarg Zero Point and ThajiwasDecided day by day, with avalanche risk
Gurez ValleyUsually cut off by snow
Doodhpathri and YousmargOften partly closed after heavy snow
Tulip GardenClosed until spring

Avalanches are a real risk in January. A major avalanche hit Sonamarg in January 2026, and our Sonamarg in winter guide explains the road and the rules. For the other places, see our guides to Pahalgam in winter and Gurez Valley in winter. If you want to know what Doodhpathri is like outside winter, read our Doodhpathri destination guide, and the Tulip Garden Srinagar guide tells you when the garden opens in spring.

Srinagar cabs cannot do local sightseeing in Pahalgam or Sonamarg. You need a local union taxi for Betaab Valley, Aru, Chandanwari, Thajiwas and Zero Point. Plan for that extra cost. For the town and its road in better weather, our Sonamarg Kashmir page and our Pahalgam Kashmir travel guide have the details.

The Igloo Cafe is the most popular new place of the month. It is normally closed over Christmas and New Year, then opens in the second week of January. Read our Igloo Cafe Gulmarg guide for the menu and what to expect.

Flights, Roads and Delays

Kashmir in January is when delays hit hardest. This is the part many guides skip.

  • Fog: Dense fog can cancel flights even when no snow has fallen. On 5 January 2025, all flights at Srinagar airport were cancelled for a day because of fog, according to Greater Kashmir.
  • Snow: Heavy snow closes the runway. After a big spell, stranded guests can wait a day or two for seats.
  • Highway: The Jammu to Srinagar highway can close after heavy snow, so overland routes are not a reliable backup.
  • Gulmarg road: After snow, only 4×4 vehicles or cars with snow chains are allowed beyond Tangmarg. You may change to a local vehicle there.
  • Daylight: The sun sets around 5 pm. Do not plan night drives.
  • Buffer: Keep two spare days in January if your flight home is fixed. One is often not enough.

For the Gondola, read our Gulmarg Gondola ticket booking guide. It explains phases, Tatkal slots and refunds. Tatkal tickets open daily at 5 PM for next-day rides. Phase 2 needs a valid Phase 1 ticket, and both can stop for wind.

Where to Stay in Kashmir in January

On a trip to Kashmir in January, heating decides whether you are comfortable. Choose a hotel with centralised heated rooms, and ask before you book, because not every property has it. Our packages use centralised heated hotel rooms in Srinagar and Gulmarg. Dal Lake houseboats are beautiful in snow, but check the heating first. Our heritage houseboat stay on Dal Lake and our Dal Lake luxury houseboat packages explain what is warm and what is not.

For Gulmarg, a resort night makes the snow easy. See our Khyber Gulmarg stay package and our Gulmarg tour packages if you want a Gulmarg-focused trip.

Crowds and Prices in Kashmir in January

Kashmir in January has two price levels.

Dates for Kashmir in January up to about 10 January sit inside the peak season of 21 December to 10 January, so hotels cost more and many sell out. If you want the festive dates, see our Christmas and New Year in Kashmir package. After that, rooms are easier to find and rates ease a little. The second half of January is also when skiers arrive in numbers and the Igloo Cafe is open, so Gulmarg still fills up on weekends.

Our land-only starting prices per person, twin sharing, are Rs 10,500 for 4 nights and 5 days, Rs 12,500 for 5 nights and 6 days, and Rs 15,500 for 6 nights and 7 days. Dates from 21 December to 10 January cost more. Premium and heritage stays start from about Rs 22,000. Gala dinners for Christmas and New Year are billed by the hotel and sit outside package prices. Our packages cover the driver allowance, tolls and parking, and we answer on WhatsApp during your trip.

For a short snow break, see our 3 nights 4 days Kashmir tour package. For a slower pace with Pahalgam, see our 4 nights 5 days Kashmir tour package. For a wider cost view, read Kashmir trip cost for 5 days. Delays are most likely in the coldest weeks, so read our guide on winter safety in Kashmir before you plan.

Plan this trip with local Srinagar experts

Our Kashmir winter packages start from Rs 8,500 per person for 3 nights and 4 days, and from Rs 10,500 for 4 nights and 5 days (land-only, twin sharing, indicative). Tell us your dates and we send a plan and a fair quote, and we tell you about any cost change before we act.

A Simple Plan for Kashmir in January

This is a six-day plan for Kashmir in January that leaves room for delays. The order can change with the weather.

Day 1: Srinagar. Arrive, rest and take a short shikara ride if the water allows. Daylight is short, so keep it easy.

Day 2: Gulmarg. Drive up in the morning. Ride the Gondola if your ticket is booked and the wind is calm. Try a sledge ride on the meadow. Night in a heated Gulmarg hotel.

Day 3: Gulmarg. Use this free day for skiing, a lesson, the Igloo Cafe if it is open, or the Gondola again. This day is also your weather cushion if Day 2 was lost to snow.

Day 4: Gulmarg to Srinagar. Drive back after breakfast and spend the afternoon in the old city, Jamia Masjid from outside and the bazaars.

Day 5: Pahalgam, or a Srinagar day. If the road and the taxis are clear, go to Pahalgam. If not, enjoy Hazratbal, a Mughal garden and a long Wazwan dinner.

Day 6: Departure. Book an afternoon flight, and keep the day after as a spare.

If you only have four days, our four-day Kashmir package keeps the Gulmarg night and drops Pahalgam. To learn why the resort matters, read why Gulmarg is Asia’s premier ski destination. For the town itself, see our Gulmarg destination guide. If you need your own route or number of nights, our customized Kashmir holiday packages let you set it. Families can see our Kashmir family tour package with price, and couples can look at our Kashmir honeymoon package.

Skiing and Snow Activities in January

Kashmir in January is the strongest ski month. Beginners can take lessons on the lower slopes, and stronger skiers go higher when the lifts and the Gondola are running. Gear is hired on site. Sledging, snow bike rides and pony rides are easy options for families on snow days. Advanced skiers should plan extra days, because wind and snow can close the upper slopes.

Our winter ski trip to Gulmarg guide covers lessons, gear and slopes by level. If skiing is your main reason for visiting Kashmir in January, choose the six-night plan so you have a free day on the mountain.

What to Pack for Kashmir in January

For Kashmir in January, pack for the deep cold. Take thermals, a heavy down jacket, waterproof gloves, a woollen cap, wool socks and waterproof boots with good grip. Add sunglasses for snow glare and moisturiser and lip balm for dry air. Keep a warm layer in your hand luggage, not in the boot. Our Kashmir winter packing guide has the full list, and you can hire jackets and boots in Gulmarg.

Who Should Go and Who Should Skip

Kashmir in January suits you if:

  • You want deep snow, skiing and a proper winter feel.
  • You can keep your dates flexible and carry a buffer.
  • You are happy with simple plans and warm evenings.
  • You are travelling as a couple, a family or a group of friends.

Skip Kashmir in January, or pick a later month such as February, if:

  • You have a fixed flight and cannot add spare days.
  • You want Gurez or Sonamarg Zero Point to be guaranteed.
  • You cannot cope with extreme cold, or you have a health condition that needs care at height. Talk to your doctor first.
  • You are travelling with very young children or older parents who feel the cold badly.

We would rather tell you this now than meet you at the airport with a plan that cannot work.

For Foreign Travellers

We host guests from the Gulf, the UK, the US, Australia and Malaysia. Kashmir in January is popular with them on longer India trips, and a delay in Srinagar can affect your next flight.

  • Arrival: Fly into Srinagar airport. We meet you at arrivals.
  • Visa: You need a valid Indian visa. Apply for an e-visa on the official Indian e-visa site.
  • Permits: No special permit is needed for Srinagar, Gulmarg or Pahalgam. Hotels ask for passport and visa copies, so carry several.
  • Gondola ID rule: For foreign visitors, the travel agency sends full names and passport numbers to the cable car company at least two days before the visit, and the gate checks your ID against the ticket. Give us your passport details early.
  • Connections: Do not book a tight same-day connection out of Srinagar in January. Leave a full day.
  • Money: Foreign cards often fail in smaller shops. Carry cash in rupees.
  • Insurance: Take travel insurance that covers winter sports, delays and medical help.
  • Food: Meat is almost always halal. Vegetarian food is easy. Alcohol is hard to find. Our Kashmir cuisine guide lists the dishes worth trying in the cold.
  • Prayer: Winter dusk is early, around 5 pm. Plan prayer stops around your drives.

Our guide for foreign tourists in Kashmir covers ID rules and payments in more detail. Check J&K Tourism for official advisories before you travel.
