Winter is now one of our busiest times for Kashmir tour package booking, and it needs more planning than summer. Here is what changes.
Dates to know. Chillai Kalan, the coldest stretch of the year, runs from December 21, 2026 to January 31, 2027 and is traditionally called the 40-day period. Plan two nights in Gulmarg, not one. Snow days and slower roads mean a single night often ends with a rushed morning. Srinagar to Gulmarg is about 50 km, usually 1.5 to 2 hours, and 2 to 2.5 hours in winter. Regular cars may be stopped at Tangmarg, so local arrangements matter. Expect shorter days. It gets dark around 5 pm, so we plan sightseeing earlier and keep evening drives short. Gulmarg to Pahalgam often takes 4 to 5 hours in winter, which is why we avoid squeezing it between two big activities.

Visa. Most foreign travellers need an Indian visa. Apply through the official Indian e-Visa portal and make sure the visa type matches your trip. Check the rules for your own nationality, because they change.
Form C. Every hotel, houseboat or homestay that hosts a foreign guest must submit Form C online through the FRRO website. Srinagar police have taken action against stays that skipped it, so do not book a place that avoids the question. We only arrange stays that complete Form C.
Permits. Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam do not need a separate permit for foreigners. Border areas, parts of Gurez and some areas in Ladakh need permission, and rules change, so ask us before you add them. Government advice and insurance. Read your own government’s current travel advice before you book, and buy travel insurance that covers the route and any winter sport, such as skiing.
Getting here. Most travellers fly into Delhi and then take a short flight to Srinagar, which has the airport code SXR. We arrange airport meet-and-greet so you are not left to find a taxi alone.
Money and phone. Carry some cash, because cards often fail in small shops and in smaller towns. Ask us before you buy a SIM card, as rules for foreign visitors can be different. Wi-Fi is available in most hotels.
